My son was hospitalized 2 1/2 weeks ago with a bout of bleeding. He was in for 10 days. About 4-5 days after coming home he started hurting in his stomach. We tried some laxatives and he got some relief but started hurting really bad on Fri. He went to the local ER- not our CF hospital which is an hour away. They did x rays and said he had a partial small bowel obstruction- he was admitted and had a cat scan which didnt show an obstruction. They waited longer than the 2 hrs after he drank the contrast liquid- not sure if that matters or not. They gave him pain med and watched him over night. When he woke up he felt better and they dismissed him- 4 hours later he was hurting again. That was yesterday- I took him pain med and told him to eat soft diet. Again this morning he felt ok but is hurting again now. Not sure what my question is but just wanted some feedback on anyones experiences and what you would do. I have a call in to the dr we saw over weekend but again these arent the CF docs. With the bleeding we didnt have a great experience with the CF docs calling us back. We are new to the adult docs-he just turned 22 and we have never had this trouble with the peds docs. He is going to the bathroom- very liquid- they did start him on miralax but from what Ive heard that doesnt always mean there isnt an obstruction. Just a stressed mom here wanting to do the right thing. Thanks for any insights. Susan

Here's an article I wrote about bowel obstruction in CF

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/113136/progression_treatment_and_prevention.html

I had a bowel obstruction in December that finally resolved itself after being treated with Go-Lyetly. I also experienced bleeding when I was a junior higher. The bleeding could be caused by excessive straining, or maybe even hemorrhoids. Be sure that he stays very well hydrated since the BMs are so liquid. Is he taking pacreatic enzyme supplements, and is he taking them compliantly?

I hope this resolves itself. If you have any other questions, I'd be happy to help out any way I can. Please read the article and see if that helps answer some questions.

Thank you for the reply- I should have been more clear- the bleeding was lungs. He does take enzymes and is very compliant with them. I think part of the problem came from his long hospital stay - not moving around enough. Thanks again.

Hi Susan --

This happened to me in high school... it's common in CF... many newborns are diagnosed with CF because they are born with meconium ileus (blocked intestines). Ever since that first episode, every once in a while I realize that I haven't gone to the bathroom in a while. Now I keep miralax (which has recently changed from being prescription to over the counter) on hand in my home so if I'm ever nervous about it, I can take some. It's just a gentle powder stool softener you can mix in a drink. I'd recommend this since it's much better to nip in the bud early that wait until it becomes an issue!!
