HillRom vest-do you have to unplug after each use?

Add me to the list of not reading the instructions. I had someone come out and show me how to use my original vest and they never said anything about that. I never unplugged mine unless I am taking it somewhere. It stays plugged in at all times...during sunny days, storms, power outages, hurricanes, etc. I have never had a problem with it *knock on wood*. I do not have it plugged into a surge protector, but I have thought about doing that.

Have no fear, SCIENCE GAL IS HERE! *cues theme music as lab coat flutters in the breeze*

Here are the reasons you should unplug the Vest:

1. This is a powerful appliance, and even if the power is turned off, it is still causing an energy drain. This means that electrons are still hopping around on those wires in there. Electrons have a charge, and could potentially set of a spark once you flip the power switch again. For this reason, we should be plugging in the vest, then powering it up to start a treatment. Once a treatment is complete, power it down (which sends the signal to the electrons to take it easy) then unplug the cord so the electrons don't keep traveling up and down the cord.

2. It's environmentally sound <img src=""> Even though there's only a small amount of charge being drained by leaving the cord plugged in, that could be just enough to trip a breaker should you try to use another outlet in the house. Why spend money on energy you're not actively using? Save those nickels and dimes for a cheeseburger! (Yay calories!)

3. Leaving a cord connected to the wall will cause a buildup of heat either in the outlet itself or through the wires in the cord. This could potentially damage the connection and leave you without a working Vest. (BOOOO HISSSS) I don't remember if the cord for the HillRom is a separate cord that can be easily replaced, but why chance it?

4. Leaving things plugged in is a tripping hazard. 44% of children who have an accident in the home have a tripping accident.

I dont unplug. I am plugged into a surge protector, but ONLY because my outlets are old (2 prong) and I ran out of 3 way adapters to put it directly into the outlet.

I will admit that I am lazy and dont want to be bothered for this small thing. I am willing to pay whatever $$ it costs in electricity & I apologize for not worrying about the global issues I might be contributing to.

DS's devilbiss compressor says the same thing. We have a surge protector and I just turn it off if we take it elsewhere -- so nobody accidentally turns them on at the hotel, lake home... Never thought about it before. No we know...
