A note about socialized medicine...

I know recently Obama has passed a Bill relating to health care, and I'm sure some of you are for it and some are against, and when i read that Aspiemom wasn't approved for colistin, that kinda made me upset. I just want to relay some info about the services in Canada, and maybe you can make your judgement based on that...

In Ontario, all of my enzymes are covered. We have a choice from about 3 different kinds. Old inhalable antibiotics such as colistin and tobramycin (not TOBI) are covered as well. Same with Cipro, and a bunch of oral ones i can't recall right now. Salbutemol, inhaled steroids, antacids are covered. Boost plus, scandishakes are covered. Hospital stays, and visits are covered. Hell even tx's are covered...

What isn't covered with your health card, you can apply for a provincial health insurance callled trillium, and that will cover the rest, including zithro, hypertonic saline.

Stuff that isn't covered with Trillium, your doctor can write a note to the province saying that you need this paticular drug (most likely one that is new on the market, or really expensive, like TOBI, Pulmozyme or Aztreonam) and if you can show that this person will benefit from it or they are really sick, they it will get approved as well

I just hate reading peoples posts here saying they aren't covered for this, or for that, and at the same time people are going against socialized medicine. I dunno about you guys, but i think we have it pretty good up here.

Canada is currently doing a Long-Term Study, Comparing Vest Therapy to Positive Expiratory Pressure (PEP) Therapy in the Treatment of Cystic Fibrosis ...I sure hope that this will eventually lead to completing the trial process & resulting in the Vest being covered there.

In the province I am in Hypertonic Saline is covered with there is a shown need, I know our CF Dr. has mentioned using it routinely, if a dr. recommends it, it is covered. As for the vest. NO it is not covered right now, but it is not just this country that has been doing studies about the benefits of the vest comparred to manual CPT and other methods. I have spoken with CF moms/adults who have used it, either on loan from clinic or have purchased one on their own. And there was some complaining about the size of the machine and noise. Maybe when my daughter is older, but right now while she is young enough to still sit on my lap, it is great time for us to watch her favorite show, or just talk. And I like to feel "in control" of her physio, if she is at all congested, I know what areas (lobes) need the extra attention. We also do a lot of "trampoline therapy" similar to that of Sweden to add to her manual CPT. It would be nice however, if the vest was covered. But I think with everything else being 100% covered, I think we are doing very well. My daughter was hospitalized for two weeks last year, on two iv antibiotics, tobi.....then brought tobi home for 52 days....NO charge. Can't imagine if we had had to pay the 6000.00 bill for the TOBI for home use! Do private health plans in the U.S cover the cost of nutritional supplements like pediasure, scandishake....etc.?
