Allergy Testing

Most doctors around my area prefer the back test which is what I had. I was tested for all 50 items they normally test for, once those react they take a small aliquot of whatever did not show a reaction and do it on your arm with a smal insulin like needle. There is no real pain involved just funny with them poking your back. The itching is the worst. I just had it done this year, was allergic to everythign ad started on shots, and it is beginning to make a big difference!

I've just had the testing done recently as well. They did the whole works on me. I had the back scratch test then they did a couple more tests on the back of each arm. Since I showed a small reaction to aspergillius (sp?), they did the blood test as well.

For me the discomfort was minor. The hardest part was lying still for 30 min, then waiting an additional 30 min. for each arm. I did have some temporary itchiness, but nothing too bad.

Like Nicole, I'm allergic to just about everything and have begun taking the shots (right now I'm going twice a week an injection in each arm). I hope to tell a difference soon.

Like you, I was rather hesitant to have the testing done (all those shots sound awful)...but imo, it sounds worse than it really is.

Thank you for the responses. I'm glad it's not as bad as I thought it would be *whew*

One more question...what prompted you all to get allergy testing in the first place--was it sinus type symptoms?
I get a few headaches & few sneezes, but the thing I guess I notice the most is an increased SOB in Spring/Fall and am not sure if this sounds like it could be an allergy symptom or not?

Hi Lynda,
I had my allergy tests done recently too.
They first did a multiple test of the "pinpricks" on both arms. You wait for 30 minutes (or so) then they take a measuring device and measure the amount of reaction and make notes on a paper. Then, they did a second test, injecting the ones that I had the biggest response to, to get a second set of numbers/measurements. It really isn't "painful", just a little bothersome at times, and having to sit there and not move your arms during that time.
I found out that I'm allergic to something that is found in paper products (a mite?)....which would explain why my nose starts running everytime I walk into a Barnes & Noble!

As for when/why....They started that on me as a kid...I doubt it was because I was SOB, probably more the runny nose stuff. However, now, the allergies do make me SOB, the extra mucus/histamine that produced drips to your lungs and makes them worse and more inflammed and congested.

It would be a good idea to get the full test if I were you - certainly would hurt....especially since most CFers have these issues.

Good luck, keep us posted <img src="i/expressions/heart.gif" border="0">
