I have serious acid reflux issues. I've been on meds since I was 12, and a few months ago I was dx'd with a new condition called barret's esophagus-basically caused by acid reflux.
I take protonix, 40mgs once a day. I like protonix, it controls it well. I did'nt want to stay on it if I get pregnant-not that its contraindicated, but I kinda wanted to stop any meds that weren't neccesary(just a personal feeling). However, i tried controlling my acid with otc meds-and it was horrible. People don't realize how painful reflux is. I did Prilosec extra strength, 2 tabs a day, and I cut out all tea and coffe, spicy food and dairy (acid causing stuff)-nada. It's not just burning-its pain-plus it makes you cough.
So I'm back on Protonix, and on it I will stay.
On a side note-when I go on antibiotics it gets worse for me too. But more GI issues, like indigestion, cramping and bloating. I feel that its b/c the antibiotics zap all bacteria, even good stuff in my gut, so I have trouble digesting. Also, they dehydrate you, so I drink more water-up to 12 glasses a day!
