Antibiotics and Acid Reflux

Pepto Bismal works for me in a pinch. I take Omeprazol for acid reflux on a regular basis, but when I'm needing that extra kick, Pepto works.

Prilosec OTC works well for me. The trick is to take it FIRST THING IN THE MORNING so that it doesn't interfere with stuff. Depending on which vitamin/mineral supplements and other meds you are on, Pepto or Maalox or things like that might cause more problems than they help.

The other important thing about having Prilosec is that it helps protect the stomach from damage caused by anti-inflammatory meds. Recently I had to take a LOT of ibuprofen to combat some serum sickness and arthritis symptoms. I know other CFers also use prophylactic ibuprofen, but it can be exceptionally hard on the stomach lining, and the result is acid reflux.

Be safe and avoid other gastro issues. Be nice to your tummy and pamper it with Prilosec, especially when you're on lots of meds. I'd much rather deal with an added $ expense than battle another set of health complications.

<span style=" font-size: x-small;">I usually take a tums along with
a acifex (prescription). I take the tums first because it takes
awhile for the acifex to kick in. I hope you get something that
helps!<br>
<br>
I have to laugh because when the Dr first gave me acifex my husband
was cracking up and I had no idea why. Later I asked him what was
so funny and he said the name is fitting ass-effects ROFL!!!

I have serious acid reflux issues. I've been on meds since I was 12, and a few months ago I was dx'd with a new condition called barret's esophagus-basically caused by acid reflux.
I take protonix, 40mgs once a day. I like protonix, it controls it well. I did'nt want to stay on it if I get pregnant-not that its contraindicated, but I kinda wanted to stop any meds that weren't neccesary(just a personal feeling). However, i tried controlling my acid with otc meds-and it was horrible. People don't realize how painful reflux is. I did Prilosec extra strength, 2 tabs a day, and I cut out all tea and coffe, spicy food and dairy (acid causing stuff)-nada. It's not just burning-its pain-plus it makes you cough.
So I'm back on Protonix, and on it I will stay.

On a side note-when I go on antibiotics it gets worse for me too. But more GI issues, like indigestion, cramping and bloating. I feel that its b/c the antibiotics zap all bacteria, even good stuff in my gut, so I have trouble digesting. Also, they dehydrate you, so I drink more water-up to 12 glasses a day!
