After having stomachaches and trouble with my bowel movements all last week, I haven't had one at all since Sunday. I even took a laxative last night (who would ever think a CFer would need a laxative??) and still nothing. I'm going to give my doctor a call in a couple of hours. Has anyone else had a blockage? Did it happen gradually over a week or so? I've really never had any bad digestive problems, I've always been a healthy weight. I'm absolutely dreading calling the doc.... <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

Early on DS had similar problems but was too young to tell us -- just cut back on eating, was whiney/clingy and his tummy seemed bigger/harder. His doctor explained that a lot of his patients "get a feeling" and start taking milk of magnesia.

For some that doesn't work and they end up using mucumyst, miralax, enemas, go lytely... So if DS has problems with constipation, we give him milk of mag for a week or so to get things all cleaned out again. I'd visit with your doctor and see what he/she suggests. Liza

A blockage was how I was diagnosed with CF. It happened when I was 8 years old. All of a sudden everything I ate or drank (even a glass of water), I threw up. I don't remember much, but I do remember excruciating pain. I lived out in the country so the doctor kept sending me home saying it was just stomach flu. Finally, after it didn't let up for a few days, my parents drove me to the city hospital and they did an ultrasound, realized there was a blockage, and sent me into emergency surgery. Because the blockage was there for so long, it became infected and spread to my appendix. They thought my appendix would be ok though, so they sewed me back up (actually stapled me back up), only to have to re-operate a few days later because my appendix ended up bursting. Again, not exactly the most painless experience. I'm not even going to go into how they drain the crap from the burst appendix out of your abdominal cavity. Anyways, long story short, go to your doctor and find out for sure if there's a blockage or not. If you leave it, it will just get worse! Trust me! I was in the hospital for over 2 months (and my luck, it happened to be during summer holidays!) and it all could have been avoided if it was detected earlier. Good luck with everything,

Rose - 23/CF

Thanks everyone. I called the doc and she prescribed some Miralax and said we'd try the go lytely if that doesn't work. She did say if I start throwing up or have a fever to head to the emergency room. Hopefully it won't come to that! Thanks for sharing your experiences. I've never had any extreme digestive issues, so it's definitely a little scary for me.
