My boyfriend has just been taught how to huff. He starts with a Pep (kind of similar to acapella) and then do three huffs. After the third huff he starts to cough a lot. Is that normal?? It´s like he is having a coughing fit, and sometimes it seems that it´s going to trow up. Some times he even has a little bit of blood after one of this coughs (streaks between the mucous). He sais the blood doesn´t come from the lung, but from the troat because he can feel it hurting a lot after the cough. He has been on oral antibiotics last week, and now is still on then and feeling much better.
he doesn´t cough at all during the day and the mocous he brings up is completly white.
My question is could he be hurting himself for coughing so hard? He doesn´t bring toomuch up (more or less three coffe spoons per day). Before trying the huffing he wasn´t able to bring anything up, but I don´t know if he is doing it all right coughing so hard. Should he try to supress his cough a little?.
Rita. Boyfriend diagnosed this year at 35 yo.

Hi Carey, Please don't feel guilty about when Rickie got dxd.. I was dxd at the age of 44 and my sister was dxd at 50.. and there are many like us, late dx..Sometimes things are out of our control, no parent, including mine, including you and your husband would intentionaly hurt their child.. It sounds like Rickie has been blessed with two loving parents, not all children are that lucky... Take care and God Bless.. If you want to talk PM me.. joni

I would recommend it for your son. But talk to his DR too. It is just salt water basically so I see no reason why he couldn't use. But definitely start out with the low dose of 3%. If he tolerates that well his Dr can move him up gradually. No reason to shock the system totally!!!!

I love using it. It took me a while to get used to it and someimes after I use it I feel so dehydrated. But then I just drink a lot of water and I am fine. It really does help loosen everything up so you can get it out!!!!!!! Miracle drug haha!!!!

And don't feel bad about the dx. I wasn't diagnosed until I was 5. I had all sorts of testing done because everyone thought it was allergies. Finally my local Dr next door recommended to my mom to have me tested for CF and sure enough he was right. Not everyone shows symptoms right away. It would be great to be dx at birth and start treatment right away but he is still young and what you are doing now is everything you can do. That's all anyone asks

He could be hurting himself if they are out of control fits. When he is huffing tell him to try breathing through his nose a few times to supress the cough until he is all done huffing. If he finds that after doing the huffing he is still coughing so hard he throws up I would talk to his DR. All that stress on the lungs is not good. But yes coughing after huffing is normal....as far as I know. Sometimes you just can't stop the coughs and I know that can really suck!

Also when huffing, make sure to take a deep breath and hold it for a few seconds so the air can get behind any plugs. It really works to help bring them up and out!!! I learned so much in my last hospital stay
