blood glucose

hey all,

to those of you who have cfrd, do you go through periods where your glucose numbers are outrageous? I was doing such a great job and then all of a sudden, they've been getting progressively higher no matter what I do. I've increased my Latus up to 20 units (from 12) and it isn't helping. I was giving myself 1 unit per every 30g of carbs...now I'm doing 1 unit per 15g of carbs and still my sugars are sooo high. I just tried increasing my sliding scale today, so we'll see if that helps, but I'm at such a loss of what to do. My fasting sugar after breakfast (a bowl of cereal and a cup of coffee) was 336! I have an appt with my cf doc and my endocrinologist this week, but just wanted to know if there's anyone who can give me suggestions as to what to do (besides not eating carbs at all) to take the edge off of my sugars until I see the dr.

thanks

It could mean that some sort of inflammation is coming up; our body does produce cortisone, especially in the morning and its getting more when fighting inflammation. Cortisone increases the blood sugar levels...
It could also be that you do just need more insulin, like we do sometimes suddenly need more enzyms...
My experience with cereal is that you need lots of insulin for that (but I do take only the fast Humalog before eating, no longtime insulin) if the levels should stay normal, but have to eat something else after about 1-2 hours otherwise the levels crash down...

I agree. Usually when you are gettig an infection, your sugars will be sky high. That's why endocrinologists say to really look at your sugars when you are feeling sick. When the numbers are high, it's a huge indicator to watch for any other signs that might be coming. Have you been feeling crappy lately?

Hi Erin,

I go thru this about once a month, and I attribute it to hormones. I'm actually going thru high blood sugars now and I'm not sick. During PMS my body needs more Lantus, and then after my period passes, I go back to my regular level of Lantus. Yes, it's incredibly annoying and frustrating... I feel your pain! I only get about 2 weeks per month of stable blood sugars. I hope you figure it out.. good luck!
