Grrrrrr. I have been sick for a few weeks now, maybe two. I started Zyvox and Tobi exactly a week ago and yes I am <i>slightly</i> better. I am still coughing a lot during the day, not at night though. I am very tired all the time as well.

So today, I woke up and coughed a little bit before treatments. I could feel stuff moving around, but it was generally a dry tickly cough. I get downstairs, start my albuterol...and bam first thing I cough up is mucus with <i>teeny</i> bit of blood. This happened exactly a month ago also...right before my period (which started today as well). I know that some people have said something about a correlation between the two, but I wasnt sure what the consensus (research) was. Do you ladies notice that if you cough blood, its around that time? If the coughing continues throughout today I will be calling again, but I dont think I will call just because of the blood...*sigh*

AND do you skip your vest when it happens too?

I found an article not too long ago about this topic. I think I blogged about it so I will go back and look later today when I have more time. I believe our "time of the month" has an impact on our lung health during that time.

My previous blog:

I was doing some research about mensturation and PFTs. Since my PFTs did not win any records at my last visit and I did have "my ladys days" at the time. I found this interesting report. It was put out in 2000, so it's not new info., just new to me.

LUNG FUNCTION CHANGES LINKED TO THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE

Lung function changes occur during the menstrual cycles of women with CF, a new study suggests. These changes are probably related to hormonal changes, reported M. Johannesson, MD, who is from the Children's Hospital in Uppsala, Sweden, and colleagues.

Previous studies have shown that estrogen and progesterone affect CF gene expression, smooth muscle tone in the airways, immune response, and cytology in the tracheobronchial epithelium. To study the influence of the hormonal variations on airway symptoms, these researchers asked 12 women with CF (mean age, 30 years) to keep daily records of lung function, sputum quality, and the need for intravenous antibiotics during three menstrual cycles.

The mean forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) was significantly higher during the luteal phase (66%) than during menstruation (61%). Similarly, the mean forced vital capacity was significantly higher during the luteal phase (75%) than during menstruation (70%; P < .001). In contrast, no significant change in sputum quality or the use of intravenous antibiotics was found during the cycles.

I wonder if being on the pill consitently would help this at all because I definitely notice a difference. Whenever I would have hemoptysis (sp?) in my twenties, it was always around that time of the month. Interesting. I am not currently on the pill.
