Blood sugar

Hi everyone,
I am pretty sick and have been on 750mg cipro three times a day with no real success. Today I upped my prednisone to 20mg because I feel like an elephant is on my chest. I am pre-diabetic and just tested my sugar and it is 250.

I ate frozen yogurt about 1 hour ago. Is this cause for concern for it to be this high?

When do I test it? My fasting is fine but I don't know how long after I eat I should test it. I am new to this all

Thank you!

Sue,

Prednisone will really mess with your BS. Basic guidelines, you should be between 80-100 first thing in the morning and before meals. Try to be around 120-140 about 2 hours after meals. Good times to test are 2 hours after a meal and first thing in the morning. Anything above 250 they usually want you to test for ketones. I don't know if you know anything about ketones. You can buy strips at your local drug store and you just stick them in a stream of urine Try to stay under 250. I would stay away from high carbohydrate foods while you are on the prednisone. You can still get your calories through fatty foods High carbs or processed foods will spike your BS. Your frozen yogurt probably had a lot of sugar in it. Drinking a lot of H2O sometimes helps bring sugar down.

I have been on prednisone my whole life. I am usually on 10mg every other day. I checked it about 4 hours after eating and it was still 250. When I was first labeled pre-diabetic, my doctor told me not to change my eating habits. I still did, trying to cut down on sugar, but he insisted that I not do that. Now I don't know what to do. I don't have a ton of sugar to begin with (the ice cream was sugar free) but I am worried it is that high.

I don't even know what to eat now and I have no idea what ketones are

Sue,
Relax a little, you sound stressed Do you have someone you are reporting your blood sugars to? Maybe you should let your doctor know that you got up to 250. By the way, people do get much higher than that. On my last round of prednisone, I got up to almost 400 It will come back down. Do you know the symptoms of a really high blood sugar? Frequent urination and a thirst that just can not be quenched. I don't understand enough about ketones to talk intelligently about them. They are something to watch out for at high high blood sugar levels. I have never had a problem with them though and I have been CFDR for about 13 years. Don't change your diet if your doctor does not want you to He knows best. Do you have a problem keeping weight on? If your doctor suggests insulin, and I am not saying that he will, don't let that freak you out. Insulin helps your energy level, concentration, ability to keep and maintain weight, helps with your lung health. Hope this helps.
