I have a friend in Halifax. She has a newborn inpatient at a small hospital there. They thought the baby had a heart condition, but now are rethinking it that she may have CF, but no one in the hospital knows enough about it to test. The baby has a ton of fluid and mucus in her lung and despite meds for a week it clears one days and is back the next.

She and her husband would like to transfer the baby to a better/bigger hospital more equipped to test for CF or whatever this is. But they are relatively new to Canada and I don't know the area at all to help them.

Can anyone suggest a hospital and or CF doctor that might help them??

Thanks in advance

I'm in Ontario. As far as I know, the major CF testing center in Ontario is in Toronto. Not sure if that's the main testing center for Canada. I'm at the clinic in Ottawa and when they wanted to find out my mutations, they simply drew blood and sent it to Toronto. I don't know why the hospital in Halifax couldn't do that but I don't the protocol. Thinking more short term, I'm sure the Halifax hospital is equipped to perform a sweat test at least. I say this because I was diagnosed by sweat test in North Bay, Ont which is probably the smallest hospital on the planet!

Anyways, here's some contact info for CF clinics in Nova Scotia:

IWK HEALTH CENTRE (Paediatric)
5850/5890 University Avenue
P O Box 9700
Halifax, NS B3K 6R8
Nurse Coordinator: Paula Barrett
Clinic: 902-470-8219

QUEEN ELIZABETH II HEALTH SCIENCES CENTRE (Adult)
1796 Robie Street
Halifax, NS B3H 3A7
Nurse Coordinator: Fran Gosse
Clinic: 902-473-4147

I'm sure one of the nurse coordinators can put you in contact with the right people. Best of luck,

The Hospital for Sick Children here in Toronto is the best place. Here's a little info off of their website.

Cystic fibrosis clinic

The Cystic Fibrosis Clinic provides specialized multidisciplinary care for children and youth, aged zero to 18 years with cystic fibrosis.

The SickKids CF team consists of paediatric respirologists, gastroenterologists, a specialized nurse-practitioner, clinic nurses, dietician, physiotherapist, social worker and psychologist.

There are 290 patients followed in this clinic. They are seen a minimum of every three to four months in our outpatient clinic for follow-up assessment and care.

Cystic Fibrosis Clinics are held two times each week on Tuesday and Friday mornings.

Recently we have started a combined CF and CF-Related Diabetes Clinic which is held one Tuesday morning every six to eight weeks. This clinic provides combined cystic fibrosis and diabetes care for CF patients who have CF-Related diabetes and combines the Endocrine Diabetes Team and our CF Team.

Patients must be referred by a Physician or Surgeon. The referring physician/surgeon must fill out a referral form and fax it to 416-813-5109.
