From Philadelphia, PA To Jacksonville, FL

When we left Jacksonville I don't remember taking my shoes off but maybe I did. They definitely didn't frisk me and wand me down though - they did that in PA.

They searched my bags in both places. lol Kurt was so peeved - he just sat there and thought of ALL people this has to happen to you lol. My reply OF COURSE it does - that is the joy of toting all this necessary medical crap around lol.

Last time I flew was a little over a year ago.

However, I had a similar experience to Lindsey, except the person frisking me was a woman with a very deep voice (and she was bigger than me!)

I had no medical equipment, but brought one of my laptops. I got into a big hassle when they didn't demand that I take my laptop out of the case. Even when I asked, I was ignored, they just took the bag as is and ran it through the X-ray machine! When they soon asked "What's in the bag, sir!?", I replied with, "My computer, but no one told me to take it out...can I take it out, now?"...the husky lady soon replied with a loud "Don't Touch IT!", as if it were something already ready to go off!

Anyway, did you ask the airlines about your meds, and special equipment? My mom has to take an oxygen tank, and there were a lot of things that had to be done, most of which I beleive the airlines had to do (but she was without oxygen for over a half hour!).

They still have random searches, I'm sure...I got caught in that routine, as well! (had to take my shoes off, but fortunately I didn't have to get stripped searched, or something!) Not fun getting picked at random when you're running late, because they didn't properly check your bags or something!

I was pretty peeved, too!! Sometimes those guard-men can be so "authority-hungry", they give you an attitude!
Though nothing peeved me so much as to when I came back to Japan, with a greeting from the "drug, tobacco, and firearm" K-9's!! I think they were so happy to see me, the guardmen there thought I was smuggling in something (or maybe it was the left-over gun powder smell from when I went shooting with my brother-in-law the day before). They took me into a private room, searched all my bags, despite the fact the dogs were acting funny BEFORE the bags were in my hands! I had med samples that my sister gave me...thought they were gonna end up being illegal in Japan (LOL!). But, good thing they didn't find the shell casings I took home as "going-away-presents"!
Just hope I don't have to travel with my Japanese sword...that'll be a nightmare! (I'd end up UPS'ing it, anyway!)

I flew in May. I bring my nebulizer, a cooler with Pulmo in it, needles, a bag just for meds, etc. I usually get asked, and they look at them. But because it's medical equipment, they can't tell you not to carry them on. They actually suggest you carry on any medication, so if your crap gets lost, you won't be screwed. You're allowed all that medical carry on... and it doesn't even count against your carry on luggage. You can bring all that crap... and your bag and purse per person, or whatever. It doesn't count against you.

They may hassle you a bit, searching through it... they do tend to look suspicious... but they won't tell you not to bring all the stuff.

Jane,

I just got off a plane a few hours ago. I carried my pulmozyme in a small cooler using frozen vegetables to keep it cool and had no problem. I had no problem with my small compressor and cups. The other drugs were fine since I put them in a clear bag and they could see them. I do carry a letter from my clinic just in case and even though they may not read it it eases my mind knowing I have it. Try to separate the medical things from your other carry on bags so they see easily and can search quickly if needed. They are letting people carry on small shampoo and gel stuff as long as its in a separate clear bag. Safe travels!

A lot of the carry on rules have changed very recently with the advent of liquid & gels suddenly being the root of all evil. You can only take items that are not larger than 3 oz. now -- nothing dangerous like say a tube of toothpaste or lotion if it is larger than 3 oz........Baby bottles, food and all medication are exepmt (I think) but the 24 cans of whatever it is you mentioned might be a problem -- you may have to check your luggage for that.

I traveled to Europe right after they started the liquid/gel thing. I had my compressor in my carry on, and all my liquid meds in a small cooler in my carry on. They never gave me a problem about anything. I had all the prescription labels with my name on them inside the cooler, so they could match it if they wanted. I had a doctors note but they didn't need it. I just said, its medicine for my lung condition.
If you feel better bringing a doc note, then I'd do that. But they're not going to confiscate anything from you.

However, they did throw out my favorite lipstick!!!

I asked our CF doc for a letter for the airlines just in case over the holidays they have a problem with us carrying on the vest , compressor, nebs, 10 meds(some are liquid) pulmozyme with an icepack. I figure I can always bring the letter and if it's not necessary well at least I've covered the bases. The letter just states what CF is(briefly) that the equipment is imperitive for her health and Needs to be carried on. Maybe it will make the airline let us get on the plane before others so we can put the stuff away and not cause too much disruption doing it. We have not flown yet as a family with all this equipment so we'll see how it goes.

Hi Jane,

I flew this past September, right after the bombing in London I think. At that time they had a ban on all liquids. All you need is a letter from your doctor containing all the meds on it that you will be taking with you as carry on.

I flew to Uruguay, South America. Everything was fine. In most cases, they didn't even look at the letter. I had one carry on with regular meds and one that was insulated with my cold meds (Pulmozyme). Everything was fine. You'll be fine. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions!!!
