chest x-rays

I usually have all of my annual stuff scheduled for the same time so that my doc has a good idea of my baseline. Annual stuff includes:

chest x-ray
oral glucose tolerance test (YUCK!)
dexascan (every other year)
vitamin levels

I also have x-rays done whenever I'm experiencing an exacerbation.

They can tell where your plugs are, and if you have an exacerbation they can tell where your trouble spot is and as treatment progresses they can see how much of it you have cleared out. They are very helpful. I don't like the idea of radiation either, but they can tell alot from my films.
Of course now I'm not having any. But usually every other appointment (if I'm well) so every 6 months I have one. And if I'm sick its every week.

For the last 10 years instead of an annual chest x-ray I get a limited view CT scan every other year.

Our local clinic wants us to get them every year, but it's such a pain 'cuz I don't believe they've ever gotten a clear film and then we request a report, which we get back that says either inconclusive or infiltration ??? and there's no follow up. What I suspect is they just don't get a clear picture because after 4 1/2 hours of sitting in an exam room, they want to strap DS down and have him hold still for the xray and he's usually pretty peeved. Especially when he was younger and they had some wild chair contraption they used to confine him.

Our CF doctor in the City made a comment about not wanting him exposed so much to radiation -- xrays and prefers doing CT scans. We had one done last fall.

My daughter used to get an xray every time she got sick, but now she has a ct scan every 2 years instead because it gives them a clearer picture of the lungs. Though I worry about the huge amount of radiation that they are subjecting her too with the ct scan.

" Radiation from a single CT scan s equivalent to about 100 to 25 plain chest films, and is showing no signs of decreasing with modern CT scanners. Ma y physicians seem unaware of this radiation dose, and the associated risks. Lee et al, 2004). It would seem wise to factor such risks into decision making about whether or not to perform a CT. We should also inform patients of risk, particularly where a young person is having a CT."

I get x rays done once a year or unless i'm sick... it doesn't bother me any... i figure the last thing that i'm going to die from is too much x ray exposure.... basically they just want to see where infections are and see where mucus has collected... also i know when i'm sick and they take an x ray and that is pretty clean and my sputum is pretty clear but my pfts are still kinda low... i get told to get off my butt and do some exercise...
