Coughing up blood

Hi Sonia,
As long as it stays at being small streaks in your sputum, theres no urgent need to rush to the Dr's. But if it becomes pure fresh bright red blood i would absolutely get it checked out pronto. I would imagine the dry climate could be the possible culprit, because i know dry air seems to lead to nose bleeds for me a lot of the time, i would imagine it can irritate lung tissue as well. Are you on Vit K? If not maybe you could ask your Dr. for a prescription. Cf 'rs are notorious for being low in the Vit.K area. Are you drinking a lot of green tea? Do you take Ibuprofen or Aspirin? These things are known to thin the blood and could also be the culprit. Just a few ideas i thought i'd throw out there.

thanks, Diane...

yes, i take extra vitamin K in my ADEK vitamin. i don't drink green tea cause for some odd reason tea gives me the burps and heartburn (odd, i know). i had been taking 400 mg. ibuprofren every 6-8 hours prior to coughing up blood, which was new for me cause i was in an accident and had whiplash... so, maybe that initially caused the bleeds? but, i've recently tapered down to maybe 400 mg. per day. would it take awhile to stop bleeding from ibuprofren? even after cutting way back? i used to take it about once per day in the past and didn't cough up blood.

i also find it odd that i've been spotting for about 2 weeks and didn't get an actual period (i know this can be a side effect of megace), but everyday i'm spotting which is also bizarre... so perhaps the extra bleeding is coming from other places too... any ideas???

thanks!!!

hmmmm Now that you mention spotting , kind of made me think it may be hormonal. I know that i start having hemoptysis problems every month right before my period is due. This didnt all start till i was in my 30's i think and it took a while to figure out, but once i had my first embolization and then my second i started to realize they were both right before my period and then thinking back i began to realize my hemoptysis seems to flare up right around the time of my menstrual cycle. Who knows maybe its a hormonal thing you are experiencing <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif" border="0">

Have you checked to see if the ADEKs has adequate amounts of Vitamin K? DS' doctor mentioned how odd it was that ADEKS Vitamin Drops have such a nominal amount of Vita K compared to the other ones and has us give him an extra 5 mg tablet once a week to supplement. Not sure if the amount of Vitamin K is similar with the adeks tablets...
