COURTNEY

I swear every time I open my big mouth and talk about how well Courtney is doing something happens to her!

Courtney had her first cross country track meet today. When I saw her about half way thru the race I could tell she was struggling.

I try very hard not to be the over protective mom, so I didn't say anything and hoped she knows her own limitations.

Once the race was over I saw her coach taking her to the trainer and she was crying. I leaned over the railings and hollered to her to see if she was okay. She just nodded and said yes.

She was with the trainer for about 15 minutes when I could no longer take it. I walked over there even though I was not suppose to. Thank goodness the trainer was very nice about it.

He would not let her get up because her heart rate was way to high. She was shaking and feeling like she was going to throw up. She felt VERY out of breath even though she used her inhaler before and during the race.

It took about 40 minutes before her heart rate was normal and she was feeling better.

I brought her home, fed her and she is feeling much better. She went right to sleep though.

She really scared me. She is such a strong young woman. She says she will be at practice at 6:20 am sharp tomorrow morning. Nothing stops her!

When I feel down about stuff that is happening in my life, all I have to do is look at my beautiful, strong, daughter and know I can get through anything!!!

First off I have to say that you were being an excellent CF mom. Being 24 now I can relize how hard it must have been for my mom to be there for me and to worry but to let me grow into an adult. What you did today was the perfect thing. You gave her her space when she was having trouble but you asked her if she was ok. That way she knew that you were there if you needed her. But after awhile you did go help like the mom part of you told you to do. And then you took her home and tool care of her, but you let her decide that she will be there sharp at 6:20 tomm morning b/c it is important to her. I cant even begin to let you know how much of an amazing job you are doing. You are there to look over her like a mom but you are not controlling her CF and you are letting her decide what she can do. Now of course there will be times that you know best but you are giving her the freedom to know and learn how much she can puch her body and how much she can do. I just want to thank you from a 24 year old who had a mom like you and just want to say that you are doing an awesome job!

Alisha,

You have no idea how much your post means to me!!!! You brought me to tears!

Along with parenthood comes doubts, and adding CF to that equation makes it even more difficult.

I have learned from the CFers on this site that I have to allow Courtney to make her own decsions, and allow her to live her life, but be there to catch her if she falls.

This is much more difficult than it sounds! I wanted to pull her out of that race, pick her up, take her home and tuck her into bed. It was SOOO difficult to stand back and let her decide to finish that race even though she was struggling.

Thank you SOOOO much for taking the time to write to me. You made my day!

You seem to have found the balance or at least so far. I am proud of you as much as I am of Courtney! Its hard as a Mom without a CF child so you are A#1~~

Thank you Terri and Melissa!

Courtney is not feeling as well as she thought she would this morning. She stayed home from school.

I hope a day of rest makes her feel better!
