I am sure that you guys deal with this issue as well, but still wanted to ask to confirm in my mind that I am not wacky.

I can sometimes feel/hear mucus in certain areas of my lungs when I breathe. NOT like "I get pain where there is a plug" feeling. More like I can feel the resistance as if the airway is somewhat clear but there is a little bit of phlegm stuck in there that is making noise or whatever. I know it is not a loud noise because I ask my mom or Kurt if they can hear it when I breathe and they can't. I can just feel it resonate through me and it drives me insane.

I am bringing this up now because it comes and goes, and unfortunately right now I am experiencing this. I had my mom, Kurt and my stepdad each take turns doing manual CPT last night around the area I felt/heard the noise. That didn't dislodge it. I did my vest for over an hr yesterday that didn't help. Did extra treatments hoping to thin the mucus some and thus dislodge it - no luck. I also walked a mile hoping my breathing faster would move it out - nothing. I am sitting here this morning and thought for a moment it had gone away in my sleep - BUT ALAS it is still there. I have already done my morning meds and am currently doing my vest hoping to clear it out finally.

I was just hoping to hear that someone else experienced this as well. Also do any of you (if you do experience this) have any sure fire ways that work for you to get the crap cleared or at least stop the noise.

I get that sometimes, I have my husband put his ear up to my chest and he can hear it. It seems to happen to me after treatments, which would make since, all I do is cough and try to move it someplace else or let it settle back down, it is aggrevating but cool at the same time cause that way I know my treatments are working. I dont know if that helped you much, but I tried.

DId you try the hypertonic saline, with albuterol...that always helps me when I have a similar situtation.

I have this a lot too, and wondered if it happened to anyone else!

Manual CPT and this one breathing technique I learned while I was in the hospital, when I couldn't do the vest bc of a blockage (I'll explain the technique below) are usually is the only things that help.

The key with the CPT for me is to lay at an angle (head facing down) on the opposite side where I hear it, so that my husband is doing the clapping, or hitting, or whatever you want to call it, right on that spot. I usually feel it in my lower left lobe, so I get some pillows to prop me up, and lay on my right side (with my head down, hips up)

The breathing technique I use is in a similar position to the CPT, and I place my hand on the spot where I hear the mucus, and try to breathe into just that spot as deep as I can, then breathe out hard. The key is to really think about only filling that area up. (I learned it from a real physical therapist (maybe it was a respiratory therapist), I am not just making this up!)

Good luck getting it out...I agree with you on how annoying/frustrating it can be! Keep us posted!

When i hear noises , which i have been doing a lot lately i use my flutter and then my peak flow. The flutter always helps me get out those annoying noises , usually temoprarily since it always manages to come back. Afterwards i use my peak flow and doing that forces whatever i dislodged ( with the flutter) to make an appearance. One thing that drives me up a wall is noises and a feeling that something is there in ym lungs. Its usually my left lung and if i place my hand flat on my upper left lung area i can feel it, when i take a breath in. The flutter is usually great for that type of thing, or even a hand held percussor, which i sometimes use for stubborn offenders in my lungs.

My dd use to get this a lot when she was younger (under 3). She couldn't verbalize what it felt like but I could hear it (with ear to chest or stethescope, sometimes it was loud enough I could hear just sitting with her on my lap). It sounded kind of like a snoring. I could also "feel" it when I placed my hand over the spot. For her, though, it was always the sign of an active infection and always cleared after aggressive nebs and/or CPT and antibiotics. Drinking lots of water helps thin it, too. Thankfully, she's been so healthy, it's been awhile since she's had this. It was usually her right lung.

Hi Lindsey,

When I get that I call it "purring", and I hate purring! When it continues even after breathing treatments for an extended amoutn of time, that's when I need IVs. If it doesn't get better for me after treatments, that's not a good sign and it means I need something more. Usually if I'm wheezing or purring at all, the treatments take care of it, always.

I hope it goes away asap!

I actually experienced that last night and felt miserable because of it. I didn't want to wake my hubby up to have him beat on me, and I didn't want to make a ton of noise with my vest, so I did what I usually do and what works pretty well...

I steamed up the bathroom by running the shower on super hot, then I breathed in the steam for about 15 minutes, huff coughing the entire time. Afterwards I did a Xopenex med neb treatment while the tub filled up with slightly cooler water, then I climbed into the bath.

When you're submerged in water that is as hot as you can stand it (i.e. your skin starts looking bright pink...sorry, I'm Dutch so that's the only color I have for reference!) all of your blood vessels dilate making things flow better. As a result it's easier to cough out the goop with less effort.

I hope you get rid of the yucky feeling soon, it's not fun at all. By the way, Linsdey, thanks for the kinds notes while I was in club med recently. I didn't have access to a computer until I came home though. I hope you didn't think I was ignoring you

LOL...I just realized that the way I wrote that makes it seem that I have an abusive husband! I don't. I have the most INCREDIBLE loving man at my side at all times. When I say "beating on me" I mean CPT.

Well I do appreciate all of the comments and replies. Hopefully like some of you said IVs will take care of this. I went to the doc today and told him that I had been feeling alot more congested throughout my chest and he said that he thought IVs would be good move. It is a new doc and he is wanting to go to the IVs every 3-4 months and since it has been abotu 3-4 months since my last hospitalization I am biting the bullet and being admitted. They have me set to go in on Friday - they are waiting for cultures to come back so they know what to treat and how to treat it .

Thanks for the tips guys. I have been huffing this afternoon/evening trying to get that stuff moving - it has helped some but of course there is still stuff mingling in my wonderful lungs.

Take Care guys,
Lindsey

Glad to see you back and feeling a bit better Lauren.

I am wondering about breathing in the steam deep into your lungs that is produced by the running a shower head. There are lots of germs lurking in shower heads and drains and it seems that purposelybreathing in hot steam (which will make the water droplets easier to travel deeper into the lungs) for 15 minutes might be giving an opportunity for some bugs you don't want to set up house in your lungs. Wouldn't it be better to boil a pot of water on the stove and breath in the sterile water?

I have had this before too. Specially since starting hypertonic saline. Sometimes I feel the vibrations on my chest from it. But the sound will drive me crazy when I'm trying to sleep. Have you tried huffing? or something extra like the flutter or acapella? Sometimes like you, I just cant get it to move, no matter what I do. Sometimes taking a warm/hot shower and breathe deeply (or singing) will make it move and get out. Also try drinking more (I need to follow my own advice here I am the worlds worse for not drinking enough) to stay hydrated it makes it easier to come out.
