Do you exercise while you are sick?

I have done very little exercise for about 10 days. Just walking around the apartment, to the car etc. I've had some fever's and really felt crummy. I thought my body needed rest. Should I have been doing some kind of exercise and how much? I can't imagine performing at the intensity I was before I was sick. Or going to the gym with a cough and runny nose. That would not go well.

What does everyone else do?

Hi John

I will say that it is important to keep on moving. If you can do some light stretching several times per day and walk for five minutes or whatever you can at a slow pace it will be helpful. I would not do any serious new exercises or engage in anything strenuous as this can cause a relapse or worsen your condtion I believe too much exercise at anytime can run a person down. Moderation is key.

I feel the same way about massage. If you think you are getting sick, avoid a massage. I have come down with a cold two days after a massage. This has happened to me more than a few times. So now, I have my husband massage me for five minutes at a pop.

I hurt my feet from too much exercise and the wrong shoes so now I have to take it easy.

I hope you feel better. Drink lots of WATER when you move around.

my mother read somewhere that exercising is the WORST thing for your body to do when it is sick; it is the BEST thing to do for your body when you are well.

that being said, i always take days off exercising when i first get a cold or a bug. i take care of myself and make sure to get plenty of rest. as soon as i am feeling better, meaning i have a little more energy, i am back at the gym, doing whatever feels comfortable to do, working back toward my regular routine.

When i am feeling sick i do try to stay as active as i can. Now when it comes to fevers thats a different story. I read somewhere once that strenuous exercising with a fever can cause a heat attack. I can't remember where i read that but i never forgot it. When i am sick and on iv's i try to walk on my treadmill , even if it is only for a few minutes . Now if i am so horribly sick that i can barely move, i dont exercise at all till i start to feel a bit stronger. I am definitely a fan of not sitting around and letting things get too "settled" . I always told me mom my theory on exercise is this......... Its like a glass of iced tea, if you just let it sit , it tastes awful....you have to stir up the iced tea to make it any good.
So i like to "stir up my iced tea" and exercise any way i can.
