FEV1 and chart #'s

i was looking at charts for dissability and wondering how to figure my FEV1% to the numbers given on the chart. Any idea what kind of % qualifies you?

Im not sure how they work it where you are from, but when i got on disability i had 95% pft's. The reason they approved me is because they had a job advocate at the hearing ( i had to go thru all the procedures and finally get a lawyer and have a hearing) The job advocate had two huge books of jobs available but none of them would fit my limitations, Like.... no dust ,fumes, smoke, no sitting for too long a time, no standing too long .... being able to leave on break should i have the need, whenever needed,for however long was necessary.... a job where when if i need days off, it wont be a problem etc. etc. . The job advocate said there really wasnt a job i was capable of that would have those kinds of " liberties" So i was approved. I'm not sure they actually have a fev1% limit on disability, because some people with low fev1, can still perform a regular job. I hope some others have more ideas for you....

I was at 48% my last visit and working atleast 4 12 hour days a week, but i just can't take it anymore. I just started seeing a doc and will be getting more meds soon. the other reason i'm looking into it is besause if i can't get financial help with meds I have to pay 35% through my insurance, and with pulmozme that's a lot of money. If I go on dissability through my work all my premiums are covered and I get 60% of my pay. I did the math and basically (with no financial help) i would make the same to work and pay for meds, as I would to be on dissability. Also dissability would pay about the same as working an entry level job around here 40 hrs a week @$7.50/hr. and not paying anything for meds. I need to change jobs, but i will see what happens.

There is one problem with going on SSDI. You are not eligble for Medicare until you have been receiving it for 2 years. So for 2 years you need to find some other kind of health insurance.

As far as qualifying -- you should qualify with 48% FEV1. I know that my FEV1 was a tad higher than that when I was qualified for SSDI - then a few years after I got SSDI they told me I qualified for SSI as well - so now I get both.

Realize that pfts arent the sole indicator. Using inhaled antibiotics & a certain amount of hemoptysis & hospitalzations falls under the guidelines. My SSDI was similiar to DIane's. Part of what helped me is my area & available pay scale in a certain mile radius. Basically there wasnt anything available so that PLUS my health at the time & Beth Sufian, of course, won it for me! One of the problems you will probably encounter because I did is the lack of medical documenation. Since you havent been to a doctor there is probably alot that occured that might of been helpful. I didnt go to the doctors alot in my twenties tho I should have & all those times would have made my case easier to win without an appeal!

I know that there are other things to qualify you, and that's where not seeing a doc hurts me. But they have a chart that goes by your hieght and there is a FEV1 # not a %. if you are at that number or below you qualify. I'm not familiar with the actual number, and was wondering what that is.
