First time with O2 at the gym

I am in Santa Fe, which has an altitude of about 7500 ft. and I am realizing I need O2. I went swimming Monday and became Hypotoxic and threw up. I had some medical company deliver small O2 tanks that fit in my back pack, and am trying to muster up the courage to go lift weights with my oxygen.

Reading stories like this helps my courage and inner strength to try it.
I am 35 with FEV1 at 45% and a resting SaO2 at 88%.

thanks.

Grendel,

I hope you're able to go to the gym with your O2. I know its daunting at first, but really, after that initial first time, you get used to bringing the stuff with you and don't even really notice people looking (if they ARE looking)... At least this was (is) my experience. That first day or two of doing it is the toughest, but it does get easier when you realize that people don't stare at you (at least they don't me) and I kinda feel like I have a secret that they're just dying to know... LOL! So, good luck finding the peace to be able to do it. Having low sats is not fun. I didn't ever notice desatting with exercise until I put on my pulse ox, so I didn't have any symptoms, but I do sweat a TON less now when I wear it, so I must have needed it. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I didn't join a new gym until after I had my O2.....and they have been so awesome! I goto FitClub which is a local chain.

I was actually using the "B" tank system at the gym, and just wearing the backpack for cardio....now lifting - that was different.

Anyway, I've between being sick & going on vacation I haven't been there for 3 weeks. Wait till I get there this week (I hope!) with the new Airsep.....I really do look like Spock wearing a tricorder. I do get some odd looks but it may help that the gym I go to has a collaborative agreement for a Cardio Rehab level III at it & I try to get there at the end of the 'day' for the Rehab staff. So far I don't cough lots while walking unless I really push myself. And yes, it'a amazing how much 'harder' it is to get the old HR up to the 'target' zone. I can go about 15 to 20 minutes, working my way up to 2 -2.5 mph and with just a little incline.

I can't wait to get back - my FEV1 was back up to 26% Friday (from 21% on 9/13; PICC'ed 9/14 with Tobi and Tazcef; 1 more week to go). I've also started taking some metabolic enhancers (MRM Meta-Burn XTP) as all my labs came back 'normal' and I'm still stuck at 225-ish (OK, 226.4 after vacation....); GOT to get another 30-40 pounds off to get worked up for the tx list. This is so hard - and I'm sure those who are on the other end of the spectrum (need to gain) have an equally hard time!

Sonia and all - going out in public is a very different experience with everyone. I didn't let it bother me to much except to going out to eat and the occasional trip to the bar for cocktails. Dashing out for a quick meal at a Applebee's-Chilis-etc level resturant didn't bother me but I did take it off to actually eat. I still don't like wearing it into a fancy resturant when we are out celebrating and I'm dressed up. Now, when I'm in someplace that knows me - it doesn't bother me at all and I am wearing it when I eat or drink. And on vacation I even wore it out to Ruth Chris Steakhouse - I didn't DARE not use the O2 up there! So, it's been a bit over a year and I think I am OK wearing it everywhere......just took some time.

Hugs and energy to all,
Mary
