Flu shots

I was finally able to get DS a flu shot, after the fiasco at the peds clinic where the receptioninst was making a determination of what high risk was. Took him in on Tuesday and the same little witch said "I had you down as a no show. You had an earlier appointment" I asked when, because I MADE the appointment for 4 p.m. She couldn't tell me, but indicated they could probably make an exception since we were there. Wanted to slap her.

Found out last night while at his swimming lessons that the flu has already hit our town. A parent was saying they're still unable to get the flu shots for kids. She runs a daycare and her daughter was diagnosed with influenza A on the first and her son got it a week later. The person she was talking to said they were able to get flu mist for the kids over 10, but the younger ones were out of luck.

So I call my local clinic to see when I can get a shot and was told I'd have to attend the 5-9 flu blitzes at the downtown clinic because I'm too healthy and haven't seen a doctor for 3 years, so my doctor won't give me a shot. Arghggggh!

Liz,
That is so terrible about your sons ped.! Zoe is 2 1/2, her ped. called me very first on the list as soon as they got them in, about 3 weeks ago. Also, she has 5 siblings ages 5-15, 2 of them got theirs yesterday. the other 3 get theirs Monday. I, on the other hand, was in our mall 2 weekends ago, they had a healthcare clinic set up, with no wait! I couldn't believe it, so needless to say I got it right then. Also I know our Publix, Walmart, Winn Dixie are all doing them, so look around, hopefully you will find someplace soon, before it hits your town too hard.
Take care,
Jada

I haven't been able to get my shot yet. My GPs office was having a walk in clinic bu that was the week of the wedding so when was I supposed to find the time then? I can get one for free on the Navy Base but they don't have them yet. They have the nasal spray stuff, but neither Brian and I qualify for it because we are both high risk. I don't think the flu has hit here yet but I can't wait much longer because I work with the public (people are so gross!).

Gosh, sorry to hear about the troubles with flu shots in everyone's town. Maybe its cause I live somewhere with half million people, but there are flu shot clinics at various Walgreens, CVS, even some grocery stores since 3 weeks ago! So, maybe if you check the websites for all the pharmacies in your towns and see if any of these places are having shot clinics. I know its a pain, but to be honest, the past few years I have done this cause they have the shots before either my docs OR military base has them. And, they won't give you a hard time about whether you're high risk or not. They didn't even ask me a few weeks ago.

Good Luck!

Here's the link to the Walgreens flu shot locator:

Liza,

Unfortunately, Moorhead had their flu shot clinic on Oct. 12 and the Fargo Walgreens was Oct. 19. Not sure if they'll have anymore. Maybe check around town with local pharmacies.... Like I said, they usually (in my experience) have the flut shots before anyone... even our public health department is just starting them here this week, even though Walgreens has been giving them for 3 weeks around town!

And, I've never (even when their was that flu shot shortage a couple years ago) been asked why I'm there or whether or not I'm high risk. Just took a number and waited my turn.... although, to be honest, I may have told them I was high risk on paperwork or something, so maybe they did know. Either way, Walgreens has never given me a hassle, and I would think any pharmacy chain that contracts these flu clinics out would be pretty decent to deal with. They just want to make their $25... lol

That stinks. Those clinics are so crowded and slow. You should be able to get one based on the fact the you are a care-giver of a high risk person. Your doctor needs some education, try calling again.

I would yell really loud. My kids doc, give the whole family one, on account of me. She says everybody qualifies for the first round. So complain to someone who is high up in the clinic.
