Flu vaccine?

How many of you get it? Do you "believe" in it (i.e., that it really is worth it)? Ellie's CF doc is recommending that all family members should get one, but not her as she is too young. We never get the flu...and I've always been skeptical about the vaccine because I can't grasp that next year's virus will be known far enough in advance to be able to make a vaccine against it...some people swear by it, though....

My son always refused and let him do that. He was a teen when we were both diagnosed. He told me bluntly that he would rather have the flu than the flu vaccine, so I let him have his way. I dutifully took mine the first 2 or 3 years after my diagnosis. But I was talking a lot to a woman who knew a lot about alternative medicine and she had strong negative opinions about vaccines and at some point I joined a list of people using biomedical approaches with their kids who have autism or related disorders. Between my son's strong opinion, my friend's strong opinion, and the compelling evidence that these folks on this particular list were seeing their kids get better, I began to question it too. At some point, I stopped taking it.

Instead, I do a lot to not bring germs home from work (and other places). If someone at work is clearly sick and I know I have been exposed, I come home and take all my clothes off, promptly soak them, promptly shower, irrigate my sinuses, and take some supplements to try to knock it out. We leave all our shoes by the front door (like the Japanese tradition) and do other things to prevent bringing germs into our home. With all the alternative stuff I do, I rarely have a bug for more than 12 hours. I often manage to not give my kids whatever I have picked up. It's not easy but it can be done.

Good luck with this.

Our CF clinic recommends the flu vaccine for Maggie and us as her family. The more protection the better. It is true that the flu vaccine does not always cover all the strains but the flu can be a life-threatening illness for a CF child and lead to pneumonia and secondary bacterial lung infections. You alway weigh the risk versus benefit. So me , my husband, my son and Maggie get the flu shot every year. I have never had the flu even before I started getting the shot. my husband had the flu in grad school and he was so sick he threw his back out from lifting an empty box!! People die every year from the flu; I think the # is 30,000. The first time Maggie got the shot she got 1/2 a shot then a month later got another 1/2 shot; because she was a baby. My parents and my inlaws get the shot too. They would never want to bring the flu to our house. My daugher's best friend last year got the flu; she was so sick she lost 9 pounds. So, i would talk to your CF doc about it.

Daughters clinic does the flu shot. My mom and I also get the flu shot just incase. Why take a chance. If it's in shot form it is a dead virus and I believe in the nose is live. We do shot.
