I have had the tickly, incessant cough thing during a cold and it is horrible. For me, it usually means that there is phlegm in there that I am not getting out.

This is weird, but it works for me....Chop up an onion and chew a couple of pieces. You don't need much and if it's easier you can eat frozen onion pieces. In an hour or so, you should really start loosening up. When you get the phlegm up, the tickle should subside. Repeat as often as needed.

Benzonatate.

I have, many times, had the post nasal drip/ cold type cough that makes me barf for hours on end.

Benzonatate 100mg helps calm things down.

When laying down to sleep makes me cough, washing my bedding (with non-toxic cleaners) sometimes does wonders. If you can't strip the bed and change the sheets because you are sharing a bed with someone (or for whatever reason), patting it down with peroxide can sometimes help a little too. It's not as good as washing everything but sometimes we have to make compromises.

Good luck with this.
