Having trouble falling asleep

Hi Everyone,

I need some advice. For about the past 1.5 months, I've noticed that the minute I try to fall asleep I tend to start crackling and sometimes wheezing. I start to drift off to sleep. Then the next thing I know, I have to cough which wakes me up. The cough is productive everytime. Then, I try to fall asleep again. Again, I start feeling congusted, wheezing (sometimes crackling), and end up having to cough. Again, it's productive. Usually this whole process is about 10 minutes before it starts again. Like I said, the moment I start to drift, I have to cough.

So anyway, this is what I've tried:

1.) Doing my bedtime treatment at 10:00 pm. I thought maybe I'd sleep better if I did it closer to bedtime. - NO EFFECT

2.) Doing my bedtime treatment at 8:00 pm. I thought maybe I'd sleep better if I did it futher from bedtime. - NO EFFECT

3.) Sleep with head propped onto 2 pillows. - NO EFFECT

4.) I have to take my puppy out before bedtime. Actually, he is a year old but won't go out unless I'm in his field of vision. So, I stopped taking him out right before bed. Jake does it for me. - SOME EFFECT I have noticed that it is a little better if I don't take him out. It seemed like when I came in from freezing outside for those 10 minutes I started wheezing. I always was fully covered. Still I'd wheeze when I came in. That has improved yet I still have the trouble when trying to fall asleep.

I'm not sure if I need maybe something like Advair or what? I will call my doc on Monday and bump my appointment up from the beginning of March. But until then, what do you think? I have no problems at all throughout the day. None. Only when I am trying to fall asleep. Sometimes I can ignore it and fall asleep. Most times it has me up for at least an hour. It's a constant cycle.

I have noticed that the occ. wheezing is new. It started when winter began. I do think that winter has had a part in it.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I think the concentration of dog dander along with a possible allergy of dust mites that are highly concentrated in matresses & pillows is setting you off.

Your face is burried in dust mites on your pillow and you're breathing in dog dander in the bed as well.

I would get dust mite coveres for the pillow & matress, keep your dog out of the bedroom, wash your sheets & comforter in hot water every 7 days, and I bet you'll notice a huge difference.

I'm thinking dust mites too. Funny, I've had the same problem and its been about the last month too. I got the pillow covers and I think they've helped. I also have to put the dog out right before bedtime like you. Maybe part of it is since its been the last month that its really gotten cold, that going out right before bed is agitating you. I think thats what was doing it for me. My hubby takes the dog out now.
I think I have more asthma like issues than 'thick mucus' cf type issues. But I take Pulmocort before bed and it seems to help.
