Ah wow, this is NOT true.

#1 The program exists but there ARE income requirements. you can find them at michigan.gov but I dont remmeber exact link. It is only fair it should go by income but you DO have to pay on a sliding scale I know the lady in charge of a large part of the state regarding this program and no amount of 'finesse' would get our income into the bracket so I know this is not true and it was when I did not have as good of insurance.

#2 this program has been on the chopping block for 3 years now with dear democratic governor granholm it is only through extensive lobbying each year that it has made it through and they are cutting back what they will pay for it is only a matter of time before it is gone completely.

#3 there are less diseases now that qualify you and asthma is NOT one of them. There are some blood disorders, CF, diabetes (both my sisters had it) and some cancers I believe. CF is one of the only ones that cover for life, the rest do until 18 and the life for CF is one of the primary things on teh chopping block now that life expectancy is rising.

There are 5 other states left in teh coutnry that have similar programs. It is a wonderful program but poorly managed and in severe jeopardy of extinction I would NOT recommend relying on this long term; a backup plan is essential.</end quote></div>

I think we are being informed differently. I had a meating this morning with the lady that does the childrens special heath care in my county. I know that is has been around since I was a baby because I was on it BUT it did have a different name "crippled childrens heath care"

It does cover asthma. I have the paperwork with me now, but it has to be diagnosed by either an asthma allergist or by a pulmonologist and it has to be moderat to sever PERSISTANT asthma which my daughter does have.

She did tell me this morning that they do look at your income but they do not use it to determain eligability, there might be a fee if you are over income but that does not mean you will not get the coverage it just means you may have to pay. But what is 10 or even 100 dollars a month when you are paying $1,000 in copays like I do with my insuance.

I am not saying that my info is correct or that yours is not I'm just saying what I was told today by the lady that runs it here. Anyway it might be worth it for some people who are having a hard time to look into it.

I am going to look up the website so that I can ask the lady here about it. I will let you know what I find out about it. Dealing with everything is hard enuff with out people giving you contradicting information.

The web site is www.mi.gov

It says that there are over 2,500 heath conditions that are covered and Asthma IS one of them. I have not finished exploring the site but I will when I have time and I will post again.

This isn't exactly an answer to the question, but I think it's relevant to the topic. The following link is to a brochure about how to explain your disease to your child.

perhaps the qualifications have changed since I was applying in my teens but prior to my diagnosis I was unable to qualify since I was 'only' diagnosed with ashtma. My sisters did qualify as they had diabetes. I believe I got my wires crossed in that there are only a handful of conditions that cover for LIFE. I am very glad to hear that your child qualifies.

At the same token covering so many diseases so thoroughly and allowing for little to no out pocket accountability by the recipients is part of what is crashing the program so catch 22. For instance if my sister with diabetes breaks her leg they will pay for all of that too when really that should fall to my moms primary insurance and then her not to MI but I digress.

As of 4 years ago I am 100% certain there was an income cap, the sliding scale at the time went to $500/month where we would have to pay and we still did not qualify, they said it was possible they could try to adjust it up but they did not have qualifiers for higher level incomes at that time.

Anyway I again am happy you are benefiting from this program, my sister with diabetes is also. I just didnt want incorrect information floating around about the program so thank you for looking for some clarifications.

PS someone in my clinci was on the board I think 3 years ago lobbying aggressively to keep the coverage so I know it has been in serious peril of being severely limited or axed all together.
