I use that Glad "Press and Seal" stuff. I was amazed that it sticks to the skin! No irritation either like with Tagaderm or adhesive tape. Good luck! It just takes some practice to find the right solution.</end quote>

I used that with my picc for the shower, and it did work really, really well! But, I broke out in a rash . I can't tell you how bummed I was. Freaked my home healthcare nurse out a bit too, to see that red bumpy rash around my picc site! And I don't use it on my food anymore either .

I'm so amazed that no one knows about these things. They are called AquaGuards. I shower at least once a day with my port accessed. Putting the AquaGuard on takes a few minutes, but works very well. Every now and then it gets wet, but most of the time it is bone dry.

And I certainly wouldn't de-access to take a shower. Each time you access your port you risk it getting infected. You want to access it as rarely as possible.

BTW, I get the 7" by 7" AquaGuard.

The aqua guards are actually what I was mentioning when I said water guards - thank you darby I could not remember the actual name of them. They do work well. I just added an extra layer of tape around the edges cause I am paranoid about the site getting wet. They worked really well though never had problems.

Oh and as for the press and seal depending on how tender you are - when you had the port placed you may be a bit tender to press around the area. I know I was I tried those but it was unsuccessful when I had just had my port placed. That and getting it off the sensitive areas of skin wsa not pleasant, but that may just be me. I say give it a shot and if it works the fantastic if not try something new.

Take Care.

If your accessed port is dressed properly, a little water getting on the outside of the dressing won't hurt it. If it gets too wet, you can change the dressing yourself. I use saran wrap to cover the dressing and then I also hold a dry washcloth over that when I lean back into the water to wet my hair, rinse the shampoo, etc. The washcloth absorbs any water that drips down so it's just an added layer of protection for my paranoid self. The only tricky thing about using the washcloth like that is that you only have one hand to rinse and wash your hair (the other one is holding the washcloth).

I have also washed my hair in the kitchen sink (with that little spray gun thingy) and then just used a washcloth to "wipe down" the rest of me. Sometimes I also take a bath, which is relaxing. Wash the hair in the sink, wash the body in the tub.

Anyway, there are a lot of options - I don't know what Apria was talking about...most people don't bathe when they're using their port?? Please!
