I got a spirometer right to take home right after my tx. First i had to check every day, then every week, and now when i feel off.
They gave me the Jaeger AM1. It reads FEV 1. Mine is usually between 1.30 and 1.45 liters, that is about 50% for me. The difference between 1.30 and 1.45 is ok as 1.30 is not more then 10% lower then my average number, of what i usually blow. When it is lower i need to call.
You press the button and have to blow in it as hard as you can ofcourse, before 10 seconds after you've pushed the button. Then you can do that 3 times within 15 minutes and it will remember the best one.
It can store these numbers for about 3 months. Every three months i need to take it with me to the hospital and they will put it all in the computer, and delete it so i can use it again for a few months. And they clean the device thoroughly.
It has been scary to do them at times for me... As i have problems with my new lungs and i didn't know what it was. I didn't need to do them every day anymore but i still did it. I was afraid not to... Very afraid that the numbers would be much lower after a few days while i didn't know it.. I would feel anxious when i did them too... Now it's better and i can 'not do them' for a few days. Am a little anxious to see the results after a few days but it's much better.
