husband coughing up blood 3rd day??????????

I would at least call the doctor & tell him what's going on & even try to be seen before the weekend if possible.

A couple of things I may mention that may help with the blood:
When I'm having hemoptysis, I try not to lie flat or bend over to pick something up, instead I crouch by bending at the knees. I picked up on these tips from my friends here at this site<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Also, some inhaled meds/antibiotics can irritate things & cause hemoptysis. May be something to ask his doctor about?

That is a tricky one for a few reasons. Here are some questions......
~Is this the first time he has coughed up blood?
~Is this the first time it has happened so often?
~Could something have triggered it? Being near smoke, bending down right before it starts, laying flat when it starts , after a coughing fit?

I would find a way to get in touch with his Dr. or the Dr. on call. If the bleeding at any time starts to become larger amounts then you may have to go to the hospital, actually it would be recommended he go straight to the ER if the amounts increase. If it is a teaspoon here and there, thats one thing, although it isnt a huge amount it still requires at least a phone call to the Dr. because it may signal that he has an un-attended to infection. But if he is coughing up anywhere in the area of a cupful like Jane said then off to the ER you should be going. I've had 3 embolizations due to hemoptysis and the first one i ignored the warning signs that it was time to go to the Dr. and do something about it. Dont make that mistake please. If the amounts are getting larger... take it seriously and go to the ER.
In the meantime Like Landy said , no laying flat,, no bending over at the waist, no being around any cleaning chemicals, sprays, perfume , cologne, anything with a strong scant or smell.
Take it easy on the vest or chest percussion, in fact skip it for a day or two. Also inhaling medicines like Tobi, Pulmozyme, Hypertonic Saline, you may wish to halt for at least 24 hours till things calm down in his lungs. Is he on Vitamin K? That is also an important Vitamin for us with cf. We do not have enough of it in our bodies and it helps to clot the blood so it is a very important one. Sometimes simply adding that vitamin , does the trick for some with bleeding. Let us know how it goes.....

I don't believe it that his center doesn't have a way to get in touch with them afterhours. He and his doc need to develop an action plan for a big bleed. It is possibly the most life threatening side effect of cf he deals with (not sure how advanced his cf is, he might have other stuff go on that's equally as dangerous). And if you do have to pitch up somewhere the ER is not the place, you'll want to head directly to Interventional Radiology. Good luck!

Jane....1 cup is way too much to be coughing up. If it's more than a 1/4 cup at a time, then a person should be seen.

Mrs. Brown....if your husband is coughing more than just streaks of blood and it's going on for 3 days, I don't think the amount matters. He should go to the ER or something. I had many bleeds pre-Tx and none of them were small but none of them lasted for 3 days either.
