I just won another fight

I just wanted to share this.....especially for some of you younger CFers who are just now starting to handle some of these issues on your own.

I wanted a 2nd opinion during the winter. I wanted to go to a bigger center about 3 hours from my home with a very experienced adult staff. I did not want to wait to get an OK from the insurance company cuz I needed an opinion yesterday. So I went 3 times during the winter and just decided to appeal when they made me pay the out-of-network costs. I don't recommend necessarily doing it that way....but, I wanted help and I did not want them dictating to me where I was going to get it.

It took me six months....but, I can go there now whenever I want and they paid all my winter bills to that facility. I have appealed to my insurance company many many times and I have always eventually gotten exactly what I have needed. Unfortunately, you have to learn to fight the system and the sooner you learn that the better equipped you will be. Don't ever let them refuse to give you what you need. You always have the right to receive proper medical care and the insurance companies know that. So take a deep breath and fight them til you win. It feels good to be in control of this darn disease to some extent! If anyone else wants to share a victory against the evil insurance empire, feel free

Congratulations on taking on your insurance company! It's a shame when people have to fight tooth-and-nail to get decent healthcare.

GOOD for you! That's my philosophy... stand up until they stand down and give you what you want. Sad thing is I actually kind of enjoy these fights, I really like to argue my point/rights. I'm glad they paid and that you can now go there as you need. Good job!

Congratulations on your win! My biggest battle was insurance not wanting to pay the anestheologist when I had laproscopic gallbladder surgery. Due to complications the usual 45-75 min procedure took about 4 hours. They paid everything BUT the anestheologist, claiming the procedure was only approved for 75 mins. It took a year to get it straightened out... finally my asking them "What was I supposed to do for the other 3 hours without anesthesia? Scream?" It took some doing to finally find someone who could see beyond the stupid codes and apply an ounce of common sense! ~Juliet
