In the hospital

I see my sister posted that I was admitted to the hospital so I thought I would give a little update.

They did the chest x-ray and sputum tests yesterday, however, the dr. that came in this morning said they were having trouble with the computers and weren't able to get the x-ray yet.

As Lisa said in her post, I don't think it is anything serious. I had caught a virus and it just ended up in my lungs. I had my usual check up scheduled for next Tuesday, but I was feeling bad enough that I didn't think it would be a good idea to wait til then. I was running a low grade fever, wheezing, and chest pain in my upper lobes and in my right lung. When I called the dr. he said it sounded like I needed to come in.

They started 3 antibiotics, tobramycin, piperacillin, and vancomyacin. I had a reaction to the vancomyacin, so they discontinued it.

They only thing I know thus far is that my white blood count last night was a little elevated and this morning it is down to normal. So, I think I caught it early.

Thank you for your prayers and I will keep you all updated.

Thanks.

PS Just so you know, my usual bugs are burkholderia gladioli and staph

Hey Julie,

Just wanted to say I will be thinking of you.

I also wanted to ask what kind of reaction you had to Vancomycin? I ask because I had red mans syndrome the first time I had Vancomycin. My head itched and burned beyond belief and the skin on my scalp (just were my hair was) was red as could be.

They ended up giving me benadryl and infusing it over two hours instead of one and I had no other problems. Now if I take it I have to infuse it over 2 hours - if I do that I do not have to take benadryl at all. If I take it any faster I take benadryl though.

Just wanted to put that out there in the event that it was something that may help you in the future if they give you Vanco.

I hope you start feeling much better soon.

Take Care and Rest Up.

Lindsey:

That is the exact reaction I had to the vanco. I did research on it earlier today and found that "red mans syndrome" and thought then thats what it was. However, they did have the vanco infusing over a 2 hour period already. The nurse just stopped it then gave me some benadryl through my mediport which really did a number on me. I felt like I was drunk. After she started infusing it I felt like I was getting anesthesia and could barely stay awake. I am still drowsy from it today. If I understood the nurse right though, I was only going to get one dose of the vanco anyway. Is that what they usually do with that? That seemed a little odd to me.

Anyway, thank you. When my doctor comes in on Monday I will discuss it with him and see what he says about it.

Yeah benadryl through the IV is some strong stuff. I have only had it once and I thought I was going to die lol - I thought I was having some allergic reaction. All my body functions just slowed down so much - swallowing was a real chore, my eyes hurt my vision got kind of kooky. I started to panic and made the nurse stay with me for a few minutes. She just talked me through it ... it was kind of funny though cause I was gearing up to watch a Monday night football game when she gave me the benadryl (she gave it at 8:15pm - the game was at 8:30). I didn't stay awake long enough to even see kickoff ... then of course I ended up waking up at 4am wide awake lol.

As for how they typically give Vanco. I only know how it is given for me for treating Staph/MRSA - I don't know anyone else that has taken it .. other than on this site. I normally got it 2 times a day for 14 days. My new doc doesn't want me on it IV form though - especially since I had issues with it before. According to him it is not as effective as it could be in IV form. He said something about it being available in inhaled form - but I have never had that before. The choose to treat me with Zyvox as of lately.

Yeah I can understand them stopping the IV if you were already getting it over 2 hours. That is a harsh antibiotic - sorry you had to deal with the Red Man's thing ... I hated that - it felt like ants were biting me all over my head yikes!

Hope you get to feeling better soon.

Take Care,
Lindsey

edited to add: I know they probably won't give it to you again but if they do I found that running ice cold water over my scalp helped ease/soothe the itching/burning feeling. That was actually the only thing that helped.

Julie, my son Josh got red mans from Vanco too. It was so strange and scary to watch it come on so quick. Like with you, they tried benedryl but he hated the drugged feeling. I'm glad they stopped it.

Sounds like you did catch things quickly and you are responding. Hope it continues to go well.

Julie, I hope you're feeling better by now, and don't have much of a stay in the hospital! I'm glad you listened to your body, and got the virus before it got you! Take care. <img src="i/expressions/rose.gif" border="0">
