From my experience, we are not more prone to laryngitis. I'm a professional singer, and provided I don't overexert or misuse my voice, it keeps well. I just started my first dose of steroids ever, however, and those are having a significant effect on my voice.

This is off-topic, but what type of professional singing do you do, Jacques?

I'm the soloist every other week at the First Baptist Church in Boston, and I occasionally indulge in regional musical theatre.

I've been reining my artistic pursuits in a bit because after I finish my undergraduate degree, I'm going to try to go into medicine, but whenever there is a gig available, I try to take it. I don't have time to advertise for myself much, unfortunately, so I pretty much just stick with what I've got.

It seems the last 2 summers i lose my voice every weekend. I am assuming it is because i go to car shows that run for about 5 hours or so ( some longer) They usually always have a DJ and i have to talk over the music. Usually by the time i get home that night i can already tell i am losing my voice.
I used to sing also and i can tell you that the years of coughing did a number on my voice.

Oh, Diane, see, that's why I generally refuse to go to places that have loud music. I need my ears and voice to be in top shape at all times, so if the music is too loud at a party, club or event, I leave. If I need to stay to drive someone home and can't go outside, I try not to talk at all unless it's directly into someone's ear. my voice is too valuable to me to lose.
