Low Cortisol level

I have just finished several rounds of Prednisone to relieve some asthma flare-ups. Thankfully my doc ordered labs to check my cortisol level. Unfortunately, it is very low! Right now, they have me on maintenance Prednisone. Have you been here....are there other options to Prednisone? Thanks

Tiffany,
I wish I had some answers for you. I guess you probly know that predisone does help with a lot of CF problems, but it also drops your immune system down (that is what I have been told). I don't know how your cortisol level would be low, being on the predisone.

Isn't there any other things they could give you for asthma probems,,,, like add some antibiotics also. You probly already know that asthma flare-ups can be caused with infections and such.

I don't know really what to do to try to help you without knowing all the meds you take daily. Maybe you could write what else they are giving you.

I am soooooooo, sory you are having so many problems with asthma, and having to be on predisone for so long.....

Keep us in touch , okay. I'll be thinking of you, and hope somebody will have some answers to help you,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Karla

Thanks so much for your reply. I am kind of up against a vicious cycle. Right now my asthma is pretty steriod dependant-it is very reactive. I just finished up a 4 week round of home iv's, but wasn't bouncing back as quickly as normal. This is where the cortisol levels come in. This is a hormone your body produces in which one of it's functions is to reduce inflammation. After being on several bursts of prednisone-my body in effect said "oh, you're getting that already I will stop making it." In order to get these hormone levels back up often the recommendation is more Prednisone. I am hoping to find a alternative and (fingers crossed) once those levels are more normal I am hoping to see the asthma settle down as well!

Prednisone suppresses the adrenal glands which is responsible for secreting cortisol... I have Addison's disease and I make no cortisol at all. It is very, very important not to stop taking your prednisone if your level of cortisol is low, it can cause depression, low blood sugar, low blood pressure and electrolye imbalances.

I dont take prednisone I take Corteff which is more similiar to what your body would produce.. Sometimes if you slowly get weaned off the prednisone your body will kick back in and make corteff but sometimes not and you need to be supervised very closely as it is very serious if you dont have enough cortisol in your body.
