Mic-Key? Bard Button?

Hi!

Well, I'm not exactly sure when, but soon, I'm getting my PEG out and getting a button. The doctors are all talking about the Mic-Key button...which seems great (any button is better than the PEG!), but it looks bulky. I've been reading about it online, and Ive seeing that people are saying that it is bulky. I plan on going to the beach and I was originally told that I could just put a bandaid over it if I wanted to hide it..but it seems too big for that!
I've been hearing about these Bard Buttons that lay pretty flat. Is there a reason that they have been always talking about the Mic-Key and not the Bard Button? Which is better?

Okay, and this is a rather silly and random question I'm sure...When I go in to get my PEG out..what do they do? I was reading a blog about a lady who's baby had a gtube..and to remove it the doctor literally PULLED it out. They won't do that will they? I don't think I could let them. I dont think my PEG has a balloon....is yanking it out the only option? May I be asleep? haha.
I tell you, I worry about the weirdest things. I wasn't nervous about getting the tube at first..the surgery seemed fine with me, however I was freaking out because of the anesthesia..that scared me more than anything.

Oh my, okay..its 2 in the morning and I am clearly rambling.
Thanks in advance!

My daughter has a Mic-key. She changes it out herself and has had it for so long that she forgets about it being there. If you get a bard you yourself can not change these outs. It must be done at the hospital. The bard is flatter then the Mic-key. The PEG will slide out and it should'nt hurt. THe site should all be healed now. I think it is up to your doctor and you which one to use. You should ask him what the difference is between the two.
Pro's con's see what he has to say.

Iam not sure if this was much help.

This is what I know:

The Bard is considered a one-step button proceedure. It is placed during surgery which avoids the peg healing step. They haven't talkled about the Bard because you have already have a peg. The other benefit of getting a bard is the low profile. The bard button has a closure like a beach ball. They stay in place with a small sponge inside the stomach wall. My boys both got Bards when they had the gtube put in. The problem with a Bard is that you can't replace it easily if you have a problem. Josh had his replaced twice. Once because the tab broke off and once because he had grown and it was pulling against his ab wall. Jess has had his for 5 years with no problem at all. One bad thing about the bard is that the tubing doesn't lock in place so it sometimes gets disconnected during feeding (huge mess). We just tape the connection now.

This last time Josh had his button replaced he chose a mic-key instead so it will be easier to replace next time. The mic-key stays in place with a balloon inflated with water. The tube for the water and a lock-in closure for the extention tubing make the button itself a little larger. Both good features though.

We are looking into a new one AMT mini-button which was recomended by someone else here. We haven't gotten it yet but it is supposed to be interchangeable with the mic-key button but it is less bulky. Here's the link:

Just to compare here's the link for the mic-key:<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.mic-key.com/index.asp?page=product
">http://www.mic-key.com/index.asp?page=product
</a>
And the bard:

Let me know if you have other questions! good luck

We have an AMT mini, it is great. It is about 1/2 the size of the MicKey.

We haven't had any issues and it the smaller profile is nice.
