Has anyone ever tried milk thistle? Its suppose to restore liver functions. My husband uses it after having bouts with arthritis, but we haven't tried it with our kids (w/cf)

I recently bought it for my son. His liver enzymes have been high in the past and he is on actigal. I had heard milk thistle is good for liver problems. I don't know how much to give him though.

Thank Julie, I sent him an email tonight. I'll let everyone know what he says. Has he said anything about the oregano oil?
We just started that with the kids tonight.

Sharon, you bought the Milk thistle for Jack, he's 2 years old right? The most important thing about the ingredients in the Milk thistle is that the extract is standardized.. Sandardized to 80% silymarin is good-you can find this information on the ingredients list for the product. (I am dictating from Mark by the way).

He doesn't have any SURE dosage that you should be giving a 2 year old, he recommends definately less than 1/2 an adult dose (initially) keeping in mind that if you don't see results in a few months, to increase it because of the absorption problems with CFers. He did recommend that maybe you should try to find a hollistic doctor in your area and maybe to a phone consultation with them about the dosage amount? That might be the best way.

He started taking it when he was 16 (would have started earlier if he knew about it) and initially he took a regular adult dose... but found that his enzymes were still high so he took a little more than the adult dose and that helped. He's now 25 and as long as he remembers to take it, his liver enzymes stay within normal range and the CF cocs are acutaly impressed, especially when they look baack and see how high they use to be.

Hope this helps a bit.

Jane, Mark emailed you back.

Hi,

Julie: Mark emailed me back within 2 seconds- I really apprecaite him input! For everyone else, here's what he said:

The most important thing in the Milk thistle is that it is that it is standardized (which yours is 80%, that's great).

It should not cause any problems for your children, it's perfectly fine for a 14 year old and a 10 year old to take the Milk thistle. I might recommend though that you reduce the dosage for the 10 year old to about 1/2 the adult size (i.e. Marks says for adults to take 3 pills a day, 175mg a pill-but each company Rx's it differently). And for the 14 year old, give about 3/4 the adult dosage initially. It can always be increased a bit. Of course, if either of the kids have some really bad liver enzyme levels (I get mine checked every 3 months because it use to always be high until I started taking the Milk Thistle), than the regular adult dosage might be more appropriate.

I'm 25, almost 26 now and I started taking it at 16 (would have taken it sooner if I knew it was around) and I started with an adult dosage to get my body use to it, and then actually increased it a bit more because of the CF absorbtion problems. You may find that 1/2 the dose or 3/4 the dose for your kids just isn't quite eough because of absorption.

We're going to start it today.
