my 1st time port access...no luck and horribly painful!

oh, that sucks that you had a bad first experience! i hope you find a nurse that knows what they're doing, and does it well. i've had my port accessed probably 60 times, and it has been slightly more painful maybe once. I don't use emla cream. when my port is accessed, it hurts for a half-second, but nothing at all compared to the fishing and digging of an iv poke or PICC placement. But, I don't let nurses practice on my (like when they are getting certified to do port accesses). I am SO lucky to have a group of nurses that I see every 2 weeks, who I would trust with my life, and of course, my port. Shout outs to Marie, Lenora, Leslie at DayMed in Calgary!
Anyways, I hope everything goes well for you!

One word: EMLA!!! You should not have to feel that kind of pain, especially since your port is so new. After awhile, yeah, scar tissues forms after repeated pokes and you really don't feel it (some still do, so when in doubt, get the cream). You put it on about 30 minutes before it is accessed to make sure it is numb enough. Trust me, you won't feel it much or at all.
Also, why are they having such a tough time getting you accessed? Is it deeper than normal or in weird spot? I feel for you....I made sure that my port would be easy to see, close enough to the surface as well as in a placee where I could do the accessing, I am extremely picky in that department!
Oy, hopefully, that get better as well....that is just nuts that they are havin a hrd time too as far as putting the needle in.
Good luck, let us know how it works out,
GB hugs, Jenn

i too feel it is in the hands of the experience of the nurse. it's not to say she is a 'bad' nurse, it's simply saying that she likely did not have much experience accessing ports! you just need to find a way to ask to have another nurse access it; or, as someone else mentioned, have a nurse show you how. i too learned how to do it myself. in re: to the emala cream. i personally never felt much pain when the port was accessed properly and therefore never needed the cream. you are not a baby--it hurts when they miss! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> i'll be thinking of you.

It really does come down to having experience of the nurses. I live in the a remote area and my choices are slim to none. But just finding out about Emala is a gift! And i will consider on learning how to access my port myself thanks for the infomation you guys are the best! Kathy in the mountains of PA

today, ROUND 2, i went in the cf clinic to get my port flushed, and all went great!!! yaye! the nurse tried once and apparently missed it, but the second time she got it in. i used the emla cream, but i dont think she gave it long enough to numb it ( 15 min ) but it still was not bad at all! it flushed great, with no clotting problems, which was a relief considering all of my picc lines would clot in a matter of days! so im so exited, and appreaciate all of ur advice and comments! thank you!
God Bless
P.S. one strange thing is that the nurse said "wow you have alot of seepage: i looked down and i had lots of bleeding from the port...is that normal?
