I use tap water too. We do have a UV light that our water passes through, so I know that there is no bacteria.

After having 2 mycobacteriums (1 that led me from being pretty healthy to having a lung transplant in 3 years), I do *gasp* at those using tap water without boiling it first (or UV light). There is so much bacteria in tap water that wouldn't hurt your digestive tract but could cause a lot of problems in sinus mucosa.
I use sterile 0.9% saline occasionally mixed with Tobi. I get the bottles of saline from my home health agency and my insurance pays for them. If you mix it with Tobi and don't use it all, you should refrigerate it and use it up within 24 hours I think.

This is what I do:

1)Filter tap water through the Pur water filter pitcher

2)Boil water for 10 minutes in my "hot pot" (we only use it for heating or boiling water)

3)Pour hot water into a corning ware measuring cup (tempered glass)

4)Add kosher salt (for me, 1 1/2 tsp per 4 cups water- some people add baking soda, but baking soda is irritating to me- I'm weird, I know )

5)Let cool (covered)

6)Pour into a glass container with lid and store in the 'fridge for about a week
(I make a double batch)

I hope some of that helps .

I take a 4 cup glass measuring cup, put filtered water in it, then microwave for 15 minutes. I notice that after 10 minutes it boils and to sterilize you need 5 minutes of boiling. Then I use sterile water to rinse the bottle. Next I fill the bottle back up add some vinegar and let it sit for a half hour.

When I used the Grossan machine, I ran vinegar and sterile water through it, then let it sit.

But if there is no time to let boiled water cool, I could see why you refrigerate. I don't know whether the water stays sterile when you put it in a jar (the lids never look clean to me) and put it into the fridge.

The other question I have for those of you who use sterile water from the pharmacy. You need a lot of water to do the NeilMed or Grossan Nasal rinse. How large do the sterile water bottles come in? It seems like you would be storing a lot of water.

By the way, I used to do the tap water thing too. But after a series of infections, I changed all my habits. And one of them was to change to using sterile water and the nasal rinse saline packets, rather than making up my own solution.
