New carpet

Thanks for the info., everyone. I will probably just leave the house on Sat. morning when they come to start the job. I was hoping to stick around and see the finished job, but I realize it will probably kick up some crud into the air that I'm better off not breathing.

I am really worried now about the commet about mold spores?? We live in a desert, so mold hasn't been much of a concern. I also am curious whether every carpet ineviably has mold in it and why this would be? I could see if there were moisture stuck under the carpet, but in general, does all carpet harbor MOLD?

My biggest concern at this point is the dust mites and I am also concerned about the gasses that will be admitted from the carpet when its unrolled (I've never heard of this!) I will call and see if they'll unroll it at the store before they come, but the likelihood of this is not good. It has already arrived from the warehouse in L.A., so unrolling it at the point of origin is no longer feasible.

If these chemiclas go airborne, but I'm not here to breathe them in for 3 days, do you think it will still matter? DH will have windows open every waking second he's here too to vent the house (not that THAT is any better as we have dust advisories here nearly every other day! lol)

Sonia, my work is in a closed building - the windows don't open! so, all the air you can get circulating is good. We have air filters that filter out chemicals - Austin Air.

Keep away from the house when they rip up the old carpet. My understanding is that this releases all the fungus that rests in and around the carpet especially apsergillus which can be very dangerous to people w CF.

I've always understood that any house renovating that involves old carpets, sanding, knocking down walls etc produces large amounts of aspergillus in the air. Try and have all windows / doors open when they rip up the old carpet and if you can, stay away.

Oh, my! The more I read peoples' posts on this issue, the more terrified I become about getting new carpet! I'm literally having an anxiety attack right now thinking molds (aspergillus) will be released into the air and settle on our furniture, clothing, etc. and will never come out! I'm terrified!

I originally posted thinking mostly about the glue, chemicals, dust, etc., but now I feel putting in new carpet is a serious risk to my health! I had no idea....

<b>I DO plan on leaving before they get here Sat. morning and being gone for 2-3 full days. Will that be enough time? Will the mold spores and aspergillus have settled down by then? </b> Do I need to put plastic wrap over our couches and clothing so spores don't rest on them?? We plan to vaccuum every other day or so once its laid (good for the carpet and for our piece of mind) with a HEPA filtered vacuum.... Is that enough? We plan on leaving windows and doors open the entire time its laid as well as the following day or two (well, not the doors, but the windows!) Is that good enough?

Gosh, I've never been so worried about unneccesarily risking my health in my life. Has anyone put new carpet in and NOT gotten sick or had allergic reactions or whatnot? I've never been around new carpet or ripped up old stuff, so I don't know... Bottom line, just like all cfers don't have the same symptoms or degree of illness, all cfers will respond differently to new carpet, removal of carpet or just living with carpet. If allergies are a problem and tend to irritate your cf then I would consider not being around for the transition from old to new. If allerges don't seem to be a problem then be happy about new carpet. Research has shown that wood floors (or other alternatives to carpet) can be better for certain people with certain health conditions. It's a personal choice and your a person so you can choose what seems good for you. When the issue of to carpet or not to carpet came up last year right after my daughter's cf diagnosis we asked our cf doc what his opinion was and he replied " I don't see any problems for her, but some of my patients I would not recommend carpet for at their stage of disease" Hope this helps and I hope the carpet turns out great!!!
