New carpet

Bottom line, just like all cfers don't have the same symptoms or degree of illness, all cfers will respond differently to new carpet, removal of carpet or just living with carpet. If allergies are a problem and tend to irritate your cf then I would consider not being around for the transition from old to new. If allerges don't seem to be a problem then be happy about new carpet. Research has shown that wood floors (or other alternatives to carpet) can be better for certain people with certain health conditions. It's a personal choice and your a person so you can choose what seems good for you. When the issue of to carpet or not to carpet came up last year right after my daughter's cf diagnosis we asked our cf doc what his opinion was and he replied " I don't see any problems for her, but some of my patients I would not recommend carpet for at their stage of disease" Hope this helps and I hope the carpet turns out great!!!

It should be nailed down, I have a business which is a Floorcovering business and I have never had any problems. The only pain in new carpets is you have to vacum it alot to get all the fuzz up, but there should be no smell. Hardsurface is worse when put down becasue of the glue smell etc. Have fun with your new carpet!

Hi,

So I just called the carpet place and asked them about airing out the carpet first before bringing it inside. She said they do unroll it ouside first to make their cuts, so hopefully that will let off some of the gasses.

Second, they use the stretch and tack method and not glue, which is also good.

I'm still really nervous about this damaging my lungs though. I hope 3 days gone is long enough......

When you get back to your house with the new carpet, judge it from there. Trust your own body and if you think you are having any adverse reactions, stay away longer.

I've never had carpets replaced, but I've been around after they'd removed carpet and polished the floorboards. And all our living areas are carpeted with no problems. I'm sure you'll be just fine.

You'll be fine. You've taken all the precautions you need to, and will be letting things air out sufficiently.

I still recommend getting a Bionaire HEPA filter tower though to suck up whatever does happen to become airborne.

Again, you'll be fine. Your plan to be out of the house was an excellent one, and I'm sorry if we've all contributed to information overload. Have a nice glass of wine, and rest knowing you'll be enjoying your beautiful new carpet soon!

Thanks, everyone.... just wanted to update on the carpet situation...

Well, they laid the carpet on Sat. and I returned home yesterday (Tues.) afternoon. The carpet looks amazing! BUT, it DOES smell a bit and the windows have been open for a couple days with blowing dust advisories here, so needless to say I'm having some trouble with breathing. I can't put my finger on whethere its more from the carpet fumes (which really are NOT very strong), the old carpet debris (we've been vaccuming and running AC everyday) or the dust blowing in from opening the windows (I'm thinking that's it).... But, I will see if tonight gets better, and if not, I'll be heading to a hotel for a couple nights just to sleep. My mom is here helping me spring clean (great timing, eh?!?) so its just a stressful crazy time all around right now.

I'm also looking into a HEPA filter for the dust (LONG overdue here in the desert.. why did I wait soooo long?!?) I don't want to buy a whole house filter for the AC or something since we'll be moving again in about 2 years, so I WON'T get the money out of that sort of upgrade. But, I'm going to do a search to see what types of HEPA everyone has... Also, were the filters covered by insurance or tax write offs or anything???

Thanks!!!!

We have a whirlpool whispersure 450 -- got it as an xmas gift -- they're pretty spendy and then the hepa filters, which need to be replaced annually run about $60-100, a package of 4 charcoal prefilters runs about $30, and those are replaced about every 4 months. Have it in DS's room and it really smells fresher.

The family member who got us this, originally was going to get us a sharper image ionic breeze because you can just wash off the filter; however, they got consumer reports shortly after making the purchase and it indicated for it to do any good at all you had to be a foot or two away from it. Thank goodness they didn't purchase it 'cuz I've also heard they emit ozone, which can cause breathing problems.

A coworker got two hepa filters from QVC, think they have the same ones at any home improvement store. Think the brand it hunter? Something like that and she's quite happy with them.
