nexium, protonics, prevacid..low calcium

Just wondering if anyone happened to see the news articles about the latest research on proton-pump inhibitors...like nexium. Turns out that those taking them are not absorbing calcium as well as controls groups.....more fractures in hips in older patients.

Why is this important for us?
Most doctors have all cf patients on these to control acid reflux..... We already have a problem with calcium absorption, leaching of magnesium due to aminoglycosides and demineralization of bones. If you have low calcium, vit d, magnesium or any one of these...make it a point to do some research on importance of all of them in cf.

If you are on a proton pump inhibitor and have low calcium.....for heaven's sake...please, look into alternatives for acid reflux..... Research probiotics, acid reflux, cystic fibrosis, inflammation on google and pub-med

Mandy please keep in mind that that not all CF patients are on a PPI just to control acid reflux... many patients are on a PPI to augment pancreatic enzymes.

The article that you posted is by no means an indication that CFers should stop their PPI therapy. You know what leaches more calcium than PPI's? Anything carbinated. And I guarentee you there are a whole bunch of CFers that won't give up their soda. So giving up PPI therapy should be thought about long and hard.

If you have calcium issues, osteoperosis or osteopenia, you're more than likely on a bisphosphonate (or you should be) like Actonel or Fosomax. Bisphosphonates are not affected by PPI's.

Information is great, but I think people need to understand the whole store and not just an alarmist news article.

Amy-
Before I reply to this....please explain to all of us why a PPI is necessary to augment pancreatic enzymes....

The deal is high acid affects enzymatic action???? is that correct? If that is the reason then you are only enforcing the need to look into alternatives to PPI....

Yes PPI's can make the stomach more basic, thereby enhancing pancreatic enzyme activity.

I agree that alternatives can maybe make the stomach more basic as well, but not to the degree of a PPI (instead of turning the pH of the stomach around, PPI's block the acid from being produced at all, hitting at the source of the issue).

I think you are a wealth of information, Mandy, please don't get me wrong. And you have educated me beyong belief about many aspects of my CF. And for that I am very grateful. I'm just worried that people will stop their PPI's right away after taking this without evaluating the risk benefit ratio and taking a look at other things that they're doing in their lives (carbonated drinks) that can be just as theoretically harmful as a PPI.

Hi Risa!!!
I miss you.... I hope you are doing well. I only lurk and occasionally post, but I am always glad to see when you have posted

And Amy-
I hope I did not come across as, "Everyone quit your nexium....." I simply think it is important to point out that taking a pill to suppress one function does not exactly create the best result. Their are many ways to make the whole body less acidic and none of them include those class of drugs that are known to cause liver damage, calcium mal-absorption, demineralization of bones....

And, if I am a parent reading this and I think, "oh my gosh....could I get my kid healthier without these strong drugs?" by all means, I am for that.

Like I have said before, I really don't post that much because many of the older cfers are stuck in the land of western pharma-miracle drugs...not ever giving credence to anything if it did not come from the cf center.

By the way...the cf centers are making the shift....it will be several years..but this year at the national cf conference, they finally admitted that the nutritional info given to cfers was dead wrong. High calorie low nutrional foods only contribute to deterioration.....that was stated at the conference this year. They are now seeing the importance in the high omega 3 diet.....a anti-inflammatory diet. It's all a changing...and pretty soon.....the younger cfers wil benefit...and older...if their minds can let go of the old ways.

Amy,
I don't take it personally......I know you have great intentions...and you are coming around ha, ha. I don't think it is irresponsible of me to call attention to something that has some problems...I mean at the very most...I am saying fire when there is smoke.

I have not been on ppi ever...in four years. Since I started probiotics and anti-inflammatory diet, I don't have acid reflux....and I NEVER have stomach aches...ever.
