No antibiotics for cough...

Ellie has had a cough for about a week...big brother just got over a pretty bad cough, so I assume the two are related. We went in for a weight check today and he told us that he isn't worried about the cough but that we should increase CPTs while she's sick. He cautioned against the use of antibiotics at this time because he believes ABs shouldn't be used unless absolutely necessary. She doesn't have a fever and is eating/sleeping well. He fears that in prescribing them prematurely, you run the risk of killing "good" bacteria, thereby paving the way for worse bacteria. Example...AB's can kill of the existing staph which can lead to another bacterium taking over and so on. He says there is a definite succession of bacterial infections...i.e., you don't get pseudomonas when staph present and so on. Who else has heard of this?

I totally agree with your physician. Antibiotics have prematurely been prescribed for viral infections which disrupts normal flora in the body. If Ellie was visibly sick, running a fever, eating less, less active, then those are criteria that may sway a physician to prescribe antibiotics. Usually after 5 days, if the child is not improving, antibiotics may be warranted.

(Of course, there are some situations in which antibiotics are started despite looking good -- ie, a pt with a compromised immune system)

My oldest son has had a cough also but I think it is b/c of the weather change. The weather here in Nebraska has been 50's at night and our windows have been open. It can't decide if it wants to be hot, nice or chilly. He usually only does it in the morning but it does seem that it happens every Fall.

I would say that they are right about the antibotics. I would just watch it and see if it gets worse and then maybe revisit it if need be.
