I'm in marching band and we practice outside where its hot. when you're hot you sweat, normally this isn't bad but i'm not sure why but when i get sweat on my trombone and let it stay there very long it starts to corrode the lacqure off my horn, and of course i don't want a dull, not shiny horn, plus it changes the sound, so i really would appreciate suggestions. i've already tried wearing gloves and i just sweated through them. i can clean the horn right after practice and get it off but slowly it's wearing off the "shiny" of where i hold the trombone. i'm thinking about getting a leather wrap for where you hold it but i'm afraid i would ruin it quickly because of the sweat and they're about 30 dollars

Hi there. I'm an F. horn player, and I noticed my keys and the part of my bell where I cup my hand has corroded a bit as well. I also play trumpet, and the pearl keys seem to be fine, but I did end up getting a leather wrap. I used it for about 8 years and never had to replace it. I'd say that's a good investment. One thing I used to do since I also twirled baton (yes, I know...I was just BEGGING to get beaten up) was have a rosin bag I'd use in between songs or routines if my hands were getting slippery. I'm not sure where you'd keep that though...I wasn't in marching band, just pep band.

By the way, that's AWESOME that you're in marching band. It's such good exercise. My docs are convinced that my years of playing the horn kept my lung function so high for so long. I played all throughout college, and still play on occasion. In March I played a solo at the CFF Spring Gala down in San Diego. People were amazed that I could have the lung power to do that. Keep up the excellent hobby!

I had the lung power, but not enough interest to play any musical instruments---I tried a few in elementary school, but just lost the interest as soon as I got it.
However, having siblings who played musical intruments (my sister played the trombone), I was able to join the marching band...I just stood at the corner of the football field as part of the color-guard...but my biggest job was for the parades!
Anyway, had you been bringing towels or something to wipe the instrument down with? maybe take a spray-bottle with plain water in it to try and at least dilute the salty sweat?
I do, however, have to keep my sword from rusting, so I'm constantly wiping it down with oil needed for swords--if there is instrument oil or something, perhaps that would work?
I'm also very happy to hear you are able to play the trombone and be involved in the marching band! And, to repeat lightNlife, "Keep up the excellent hobby"!

*raising hand and waving it around wildly* I know! I know! Instead of a leather strap, get a roll of one of those sticky gauzy things they put on your arm when they take your blood. Wrap that around where you hold the t-bone! It will absorb some of the moisture and ensure a good grip. Cheaper solution and it's disposable!
