Oral ABX

hey, john, is it?

i was recently put on augmentin for a sinus infection. when the infection spread to my lungs, and i expressed wanting to try something else before IVs, my doctor put me on two weeks of augmentin, cipro, tobi, and prednisone. i culture both PA and cepacia. normally i need multiple abx for infection, but it almost always includes some oral and some IV. these in-between times (not really sick, not really well) are always hard. sometimes the orals and inhaled stuff will give a boost, but it is probably best to go straight for the ivs for infection. it sucks!

good luck.

Yes, its John. Thanks for the replies.

Anyway, about the only thing I can inhale is colistin, and I don't tolerate it really well. I'm trying it right now as a last resort.

Tobi makes me really short of breath, and gentamicin doesn't really work well. Tobi worked great but I can't breath when I take it.

I emailed my nurse and asked her to discuss the option of an oral abx cocktail with my doctor. Sounds like some of you have tried it.

I'm just trying to avoid going back on IV's. I was on them for 3 weeks and they worked good. Then I got a g-tube (painful week not much lung clearance) and I picked up a virus or something.

Hi John,
I am always on a cocktail of oral antibiotics for preventive measures. They are certainly not nearly as effective as iv antibiotics, but they keep me relatively well inbetween. Its good that you emailed your nurse, in the meantime you may want to try this.... Vitamin C. 1000 mg 3 times per day, plenty of fluids and saline rinses for the sinus's ( if you dont do all this already). Are you still on the GSH ?
