Myth. I'm too old to donate. Nobody would want my organs.

Reality. There's no defined cutoff age for donating organs. Organs have been successfully transplanted from donors in their 70s and 80s. The decision to use your organs is based on strict medical criteria, not age. Don't disqualify yourself prematurely. Let the doctors decide at your time of death whether your organs and tissues are suitable for transplantation.

Hi.

I have no idea about other organs or any age limitations on cadaver organs. I do know that to be a LIVE donor for lung (donating a lobe) you must be 65 or younger. Not sure why,though it may have something to do with going through the surgery and being less of a risk for medical complications. Not sure if other tx patients have a different take??

I don't know of any age restriction on being a donor. As previously mentioned tests are run upon deciding whether or not the person is going to be a donor. THEN the decision is made as to whether or not any of the organs are usable.

Though I will say this - well at my center at least - they said the try not to transplant a younger patient - (i.e. someone in their teens or twenties) with someone much older than teens or twenties. The try to keep the ages of the donors within close proximity to each other especially for younger patients. Again that is just what they told me as I was going through the process.

I do not know about being a donor but I know there was a woman that was transplanted for a single lung at the age of 73 a week or two after I got mine. I think the age range at Mayo is up to the age of 72 or 73 for lung and 70 for heart.

I say if all else have her get on board with the idea of being a donor and frow there the worse that happens is that she is too old and her organs are not in good enough shape to be used. Though I am sure SOMETHING would be usable.

My grandfather was in TERRIBLE shape when he died last year - he really didn't take care of himself at all, smoked, drank, the whole bit. He actually died from a massive heart attack, but he was nearly 80 when he died. Anyway, he was able to donate tissue (skin and whatever else is encompassed in "tissue") and then my grandma donated his body to medical science. Just goes to show ya, ANYBODY can donate lol <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">
