Pancreatic Sufficient to Pancreatic Insufficient?

I am PS or at least growing up I was. I've noticed recently that I am having symptoms I would associate with PI. I am currently overweight, though not significantly, so I imagine I am in no immediate danger if I am PI. Can a person become PI if they hadn't been previously? Several months ago I was having a lot of problems with constipation to the extent that I was using Miralax here and there to prevent possible blockages. My diet isn't horrible but could be better. I have several food allergies too. But I have monitored to see if the problems coincide with food allergy issues and they haven't. In the last few months anything with a considerable amount of fat (greater than approx. 15mg) has left me with a gut pain and urgently in need of a bathroom 30 minutes to 4 hours after eating. I have always had severely odoriferous flatulence, no change in that.

<---Gross / TMI begins here ----->
If I couldn't find a bathroom, I would have a mess to clean up. At these times it is completely unformed and a large quantity. Sometimes identifiable food still remains, typically vegetables. It's typically the same color as when I was not having any similar issues, though there has been some lighter colored variations. On occasion there appears to be some greasiness but this is not all of the time.
<----End of Gross/TMI----->

I know the right answer is to see the doctor but I don't have an appt. for another two months. I would appreciate hearing any signs or symptoms of decreasing pancreatic function or when you realized you needed enzymes.

I was once was PS but now am PI ...actually, the symptoms of PI along with my other lung issues is what prompted my doctor to actually look for CF in the first place just a few years ago! I too was quite overweight, these days I am literally half of the woman I used to be <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> I had horrible problems after ingesting anything with fats, I would have pain and have to find a bathroom and quickly. My weight also literally fell off of me, alot of my docs blamed that on just "being sickly"...they were partially right, yes I was sick but they didn't realize there was a good reason for my weight loss. Presently, I take enzymes with my meals and am so much better as far as the symptoms go and my weight has stablized. I am also diabetic, only diagnosed a little over a year ago...most likely related to the CF'ey stuff. Oh, at the time of PI diagnosis, my vitamin levels were very low (they are now nearly normal due to supplements and the use of enzymes)
Definitely worth talking to your doctor about...

I would definitely say you are now PI. Sounds like how I am if I eat a meal and forget my enzymes. I would talk to your dr. Your main issue is going to be that you won't absorb all the vitamins and nutrients from food. So even if you are healthy weight-wise you may not be getting the vitamins that you need!

Good luck!!!!

I would definitely say it sounds like you're going the PI route. I would call dr soon, before your appt, and see if there's anything they'd like to do, like try enzymes or see you sooner, etc. Like Amy said, you could be missing out on a lot of nutrients. As we all know, malnutrition can send even a pretty healthy cf'er downhill rather quickly. Good luck and let us know what you find out!
