PICC line question

I hhave a feeling I will be going on IV antibiotic soon. I was wondering how it works when you are doing them at home. Do they send you home with everything you need or does home health come out? Is there like a flush or something you have to do with your line? If so does home health come and do that?
If anyone has any advise I would appreciate it.
Thanks Marcy

Hey Baby Bird Marcy.

Sorry I missed your call the other day.. Life is going full speed ahead.. and I have been very busy..... I will call you back...

I know you have had a PICC line before... No big deal really... Doing IVS at home is the best ever, as opposed to doing them in the slammer....

They give you everything you need, your CF nurse or doctor will call the home infusion center, order what they want, then a home nurse will call you to come out to set up and go over your stuff with you.... Usally a delivery guy comes with all the stuff, IV poles etc first then the nurse comes..

They plan for all your flushes and heparin that you need, they give you everything... I would ask them for a few extra dressing kits just in case you need to change it... Normally they come out once a week and change the dressing, The nurse will give you his/her number and if you need anything you call them or the infusion center or your CF team......

Always count ahead, a few times I have been short on flushes but I knew way in advance I was going to... so they sent it out to me..

Usually they have you do the SASH method when flushing which is saline, antibiotic, saline then heparin but check with your team...

STop worrying chicken butt you will be just fine... Hope the kiddos are doing well and that the hubby is behaving himself..

Love,

Jennifer

Ditto on everything that Jennifer said. The only difference with me this time is since I am on 3 antibiotics instead of SASH its SASASASH.....sounds like I have stutter. I do a lot with my iv in the hospital so its really not much different. The paperwork with my home health agency is the worst. I have learned not to say anything about problems unless directly related to the iv. Some people might not agree, but it saves me aggrivation with the follow ups from them since I have to call my doctor for actual problems anyway. You will be fine. Dont worry! I do recommend you not stress about being exactly on schedule with the doses. As close to schedule is great, but sleep is important also!

Marcy I've done home IVs a couple of times & the medical equipment company delivered everything to my home & then an RN came in & did the first couple of IV's while I took notes of every step they made. Then the next time, I did the steps from my notes with them watching to make sure I was doing it right. They were available to come out as many times as I needed them to.
It is very nerve wracking to have that responsibility but you have so much more freedom then being stuck in the hospital, not to mention less germ exposure.
