Magnesium is tricky. Do I recommend it for adults? Absolutely. A child? not so sure. It depends...how are his cultures...are bugs sensitive to antbiotics? Does he have mucoid Pa? Is he on IVs a lot?

If you are answering no to sensitivity and yes to everything else, then supplementation is not out of reason. Mg is a vital mineral but too much is nt a good thing either and can be harmful if you are over doing it.

Does he take Pulmozyme and is it helpful....

Also, after rereading your message, you seem to be very pro-active and that will benefit him greatly. My gut says wait on magnesium....it seems that he is doing very well right now. And yes, probiotics are a good thing ALWAYS even in kids who are not on antibiotics.

I just pulled a DanActive out of my fridge and lo and behold it has the S. Thermophilus in it along with L. Casei. You wouldn't know unless you look at the very small type at the bottom of the very small bottle. Almost had to get my reading glasses out to find it. Now I know to keep it away from son - actuallly bought it for myself, but it sort of has the texture of really thick whole milk and I got grossed out drinking it.</end quote></div>

Buckeye-
I think it is fine to have yogart with a little s. thermophilus in it.... What you don't want to do is give him a probiotic (pill) with a lot of it in it with nothing else to balance it out. Balance is the key...didn't mean to freak you out about the yogart. A little is not going to hurt him....we just knw that L.casei is superbeneficial in cf.

Thank you DramaMama

About the info on the Streptococcus thermophlus bacteria. Very interesting! I wonder how they discovered that theory for Cf.

I just looked at two bottles of my Kefir with fruit added (delicious drink) and there is no Streptococcus thermophlus. I drink Kefir in addition to taking a probiotic. I believe what I am drinking and taking as far as probiotic is perfect for me. Kefir tastes like a thin version of yogurt with fruit added.

GREAT INFO MANDI.

Taken from the lifeway website on Kefir

What kinds of bacteria are in kefir?

All Lifeway products contain the following 10 live & active Kefir cultures:
Lactobacillius Lactis
Lactobacillus Rhamnosus
Streptococcus Diacetylactis
Lactobacillus Plantarum
Lactobacillius Casei
Saccharomyces Florentinus
Leuconostoc Cremoris
Bifidobacterium Longum
Bifidobacterium Breve
Lactobacillus Acidophilus
back to f.a.q.'s

I would not overdo the Kefir as it is high in sugar but also has lots of protein. You are still getting the sugar even if the source is coming from fruit.

That is why I take the probiotic supplement and I actually have more energy today and I only have been on the new on for 24 hours.
