Question about Furnance Air Filters

We have an (old) Aprilaire system (was called something different then, but our replacement filters say Aprilaire now <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> ) and I really, really, like it! I hardly ever have to dust (once every month or two?) and I only have to change it once a year. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> This is with 4 cats, and a dog (and the previous dog was longhaired <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> ). Seeing that this house had one of those units installed was a bonus when we were considering it to buy <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> .

If you have a heat pump, you probably don't have to worry about dampness in you ducts(unless something odd happens, like with my MILs- but hers were some wierd composite/foam stuff, ours are metal)- ours, at least, pumps out some really, really dry air (too dry in the winter for my dry eye syndrome!)

Then -- we run two Austin Air HEPA filter units (they are excellent quality and are designed to filter an entire house 1500 square feet). We have one in the basement and one on the main level.

I have ordered from a website on line and they have very good customer service and very fast shipping. They carry all sorts of allergy products.

the house we bought came with a new furnace but the filters are an odd size 20" not 22 or 16 that can be found in most home stores. So I bought the high efficiency ones that come on a frame and need to be washed.

I got two so I would have one to use while the other is being washed and dried. I do this the first of EVERY month regardless of how much we use the heat or A/C.

I just use dish soap and lots and lots of water as per the directions. and then I set them outside in the sun to dry or in the winter I set them in front of the heating duct.

I would really hate to find out I've been making things worse.

thoughts? suggestions?

The website is www.alergy.com (whoops spelled it wrong on my first post)

But that is where I bought my Austin Air units -- the furnace filters I just bought locally. They are the standard 16"x25". I didn't search the website for furnace filters - it's possible you can find them on there.
