Reflux, Reglan and related questions

Hey All,

Got back from Duke evaluation a week ago. Things went very well and I LOVED the team there. I'm slowly updating a blow by blow daily synopsis of the events on by blog.

While there I found out I have reflux and esophageal motility issues. So we are working on a plan to deal with those. Here's the gameplan:

1) Have an endoscopy done to see extent of esophageal damage.

2) Start on 60mg/day of Prevacid and also a 3x day dose of Reglan

3) See them back in 3 months

I also have to stop alcohol (only was drinking 2 glasses of wine a day anyway so isn't too bad). In addition I'm going to make some dietary changes to help deal.

So, have any of you ever been on Reglan and how were the side effects for you? Also, did it end up helping you?

Also, I need suggestions of foods to eat. I'm so used to eating whatever I want to maintain weight. Generally we don't eat a lot of prepared foods but do have homemade meals that can be fatty (e.g. homemade chicken piccatta). I've done low fat diets before due to various issues but have never ALSO done low acid at the same time. I'm so used to having OJ in the AM, and love citrus & vinegar. Really need some help on how to keep fat but also have a reflux friendly diet.

Thanks a bunch!

Steph

I have reflux too. I sometimes get heartburn that's so bad I vomit pure stomach acid.

Be weary of metoclopramide (reglan). It can cause tardive dyskinesia which is irreversible. If I were you I would avoid that completely at first and see how well Prevacid works for you and take reglan only if totally necessary.

Reglan's pharmacology is very similar to antipsychotic medications and can cause extrapyramidal side effects. It is actually sometimes used as an adjunct to psych meds for treatment resistant schizophrenia and other mental disorders. Be cautious!

<i><b>"Recently published analyses suggest that metoclopramide is the most common cause of drug-induced movement disorders. Another analysis of study data by the FDA showed that about 20 percent of patients in that study who used metoclopramide took it for longer than three months.[1] The FDA only approves metoclopramide for 4-12 week short term treatment."</b></i>

my daughter was on it for over a year for delayed gastric emptying and reflux....she didnt have any side effects from the use, but there are some serious side effects as mentioned above that need to be considered. they did stress to watch closely for any uncontrolled movements from her limbs or face.

My boys also have bad reflux, in fact Jesse has been referred for nissen surgery. Both take 60mg of prevacid and 75mg of zantac.

I know many people take reglan with good results. We asked our doc about reglan and she said the risk is not worth the benefit.

Post transplant I was put on Reglan and I did get shakes and ticks from it. I know many people who use it without issues, but it was not for me. I was quite happy when we decided to stop taking it. There is a canadian drug called domperidone that supposedly works as good if not better and has much less side effects, but it has not been approved by the FDA. You can order it from canada with a script from the US.

Try stuff like crackers and cheese to soak up the stomach acid, yogurt (a base, not an acid) for fat and probiotics, and add butter or olive oil to anything that the dish can tolerate for taste... and definitely stop with the wine. If you're drinking, your liver and kidneys are spending their time getting the alcohol out of your system instead of metabolizing your medicines, making them all less effective. I wouldn't call 2 glasses per night not much - that's hydrating yourself with wine. /grin

One or two drinks per week should be the max for how many meds CFers are on and there are so many less expensive beverages anyway.

I would be hesitant about reglan as well. My daughter was tested for epilepsy b/c of ticks. Looks like it was the reglan she was on. She does not have anymore ticks, but they took her off of it very quickly!
