I grew up on Michigan, which they STILL allow smoking in public places. I now live in Massachusetts and you cannot smoke in public places (unless there is a closed-in bar area I believe). Whenever I go back to Michigan to visit, I am completely disgusted when I walk into a restaurant and smell smoke. It just makes me think that they're so behind the times. Now that I live in Mass, we have so many laws protecting the health and safety of people, and Michigan is nowhere near that. I know that some states are even trying (of maybe the law was even passed) that you can't even smoke in your own home if you have children in the house. That's even a step further than smoking in the car with children. I think it's great that the gov't is trying to spare innocent children from second-hand smoke. It just makes me sick to think that they still allow smoking in public places. It's contaminating the air for everyone. My work is now starting a no-smoking-on-the-grounds policy starting Jan 1st. I'm excited about that. Although most employees here are VERY good about smoking in the designated areas anyways. I can't wait for the day that all states are smoke-free in public places.
