I joined this site a while ago but have not started posting until recently.
However, it seems that everytime I reply to a thread it dies.
So I finally got up enough nerve (and time) to start my own.
A little about myself:
I am a 36/f w/cf. I have a 6 year old son w/o cf. I was dx at 30 right after having my son. I have a twin brother who was diagnosed and they suggested that I also be tested. I was pregnant at the time so after I had my son I was tested and dx.
I have a relatively mild case (fev1 is 62 and pulse-ox 96%) and haven't been compliant until recently (very recently, Thursday, as a matter of fact). My son made the comment that it scares him when I start coughing and he is afraid I am going to die. I decided to start doing whatever it takes to ensure that I am around to see him grow up, graduate from college, etc.
Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and thank everyone for the wonderful information in the forums. I think that my visits to this site have helped me to make the decision to start taking better care of my health.

Well I would like to officially welcome you. It does make a difference in taking care of yourself when you are a Mom. Although it took quite a bit of progression for me to realize how important that is. My daughter will be 9 in April and she also gets scared with "that" cough versus my normal one.

Welcome! Sounds like your sons comments were a blessing in disguise to get on the compliance bandwagon. I think you will be pleased with what compliance can do to your health.

FEV1 of about 62 is considerate moderate, in case you care. The cut off for moderate FEV1 according to the CFF is 70-75%.

Hello from another 36 yr old mom- my daughter is 3 . They do give extra incentive, don't they? And don't worry about the "threat killing"- the cat forum I belong to often gives out a "threat killer of the month" award (You get a little smilie in you signature, holding up a sign that says "And the thread killer of the month is... so and so!" . It's considered an honor!LOL!

Welcome to the forum. Good for you, making the choice to become compliant. Having a child to take care of is a great incentive. I am sure you will see an improvement in you FEV1 in a relatively short time with your new attitude. I hope your brother is doing well. Looking forward to reading future posts from you.

Thanks to everyone for the welcomes and encouragement!
Sakasuka, thanks for the information...
I have always said that I had a "mild" case because I don't have the digestive problems and that my brother is "worse" than me because he does have the digestive issues. I guess that I had it backwards since his FEV1 is 71. Like I said, I just recently have become interested in taking care of my CF and don't really know the lingo and/or the statistics. I had to ask my brother what to ask the CF doc when I went in on Thursday. He told me to pay attention to my FEV1 and pulse-ox and to pay attention to what "grows" in my sputum. I can't ever cough anything up so they had to do a swab and I haven't gotten the results from that or the lab work yet. My chest x-ray looked ok which was surprising (but I'm definately not complaining) since I have been having some pain when I take a deep breath.
Also, I love the pics in your signatures! AnD looks like a professional photographer shot it, Jazzysmom your family is beautiful and Sakasuka the pug is hilarious (and precious).

Sakasuka Amy is talking about mild/moderate/severe in reference to lung function only.

If you look at it in general, I'd say you were mild too. Mostly because you made it to 30 before you were even diagnosed. You had a child with (I assume?) little to no extra trouble. Etc. So you may be at a moderate status now, but overall I think it's safe if you want to call your CF "mild."

(Though as a disclaimer, I should say: I hate using those terms in reference to CF because it confuses a lot of people. CF is progressive by nature, and therefore terming yours [or anyone else's] "mild" or anything similar is useless, because it will eventually move from one category to another, and inevitably to severe.)

But anyways, hi!
